Default Excelleron 90

Decided to do one of these for my winter "play" project, while resting the Arresti's....picked one from Hobby People, along with a Magnum .91 2C. Opening the box and looking at fit/finish/level of completion, I've got to say this is one heck of a deal. Exceptional covering job, and level of pre-completion. Pull pull cable tubes are pre-installed, hinge slots are good ones (and the Radio South hinges will work just fine if you're gentle in removing the metal ones supplied), everything is straight.

Got to tell you, this is a LARGE "90" size airplane, very thick airfoil, and looks like a REAL pattern airplane. Looks like it will be nice and S-L-O-W (for me, that's a "Good Thing").

Anyone have one of these with the 90 two-stroke? And is it enough poop without a pipe setup?
Should I spring for a 1.20 and just get it over with? (No - won't use a 4C)

Bob,
I don't have a two stroke .90 in mine but it will probably be plenty of power.
Mine with YS 1.10 finished out under 8 lbs. I did use carbon fiber wheel pants
and landing gear but it is plenty light without these changes. I too used the
Radio South hinges and they worked perfectly. I almost changed the strange
pull-pull set up but I am glad I didn't because the stock arrangement works
just fine. Good luck with yours , I am sure you're going to like it.

Bob, I just finished assembling mine as a winter bang around plane too. I have a YS 120 going in mine as I've seen one of these fly with a OS and Magnum 120 4S and it didn't have the pull through the top of manuvers. I've seen Tommy's fly with the YS110 and it was awesome so the 120 should do fine. I used all the stock hardware and including the hinges but I painted the inside canopy with Testors plastic model spray paint and it came out real slick. I don't like clear canopies.

Hi,
I am getting ready to put an Excelleron 90 together. I was dry fitting the wing halves together and noticed that with the installed dihedral brace that I had a pretty big gap on the bottom side of the wing.
Did you guys run into anything similar?
Did you have to remove any material from the top of the wing halves to make the wing fit flush both top and bottom?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete, Mine went together ok. I followed the instructions and maybe there is a 1/32 gap on the bottom side but that filled with epoxy when the halves are mated together. I taped the leading and trailing edges for flush and squeezed that halves together firmly and let dry. Make sure this process is done with the wing laying according to instructions. I think (and I may be wrong as I'm not looking at the instructions) the wing is assembled top down on your building board. Make sure of this part as the wing will not mate correctly if laying the wrong way up on your flat surface. Another thing to watch for when completed is the wing attachment holes were not aligned correctly on mine, another words the distance from wingtip to stab was off 1/4 inch and I had to realign the wing in the saddle and redrill the holes. That is absolutely the only snafu I ran into with this entire assy. Not too bad for a ARF in my book.

I flew Mikes with a THunder tiger 1.20 (2 cycle) on the stock muffler. It had enormous power. Can't comment if a 90 on muffler will work. It seems like a fairly large plane for that.

I had to sand the root ribs with a straight edge to get them to fit perfectly
but they wern't really off that much , probably about 1/16 in. I also pulled
the center section covering back and glassed the center section joint just to
make sure. Maybe this wasn't needed but it makes me feel better.

As soon as the weather gets warm enough, I will be giving my OS91FX excelleron a try on the stock muffler. Looks like Friday may be the day, if the forecast comes turn.

Bob does the Excelleron have dual elevators?

If it does would you please show how they are rigged to the servo and evelator. I have never rigged up pull pull elevators.

The Excelleron has all the guide tubes for the steel cables already installed. Very detailed instructions on how to make it work. Essentially, each elevator half is hooked up just like a normal rudder pull/pull setup works. Each elevator half has a top and bottom cable that goes to the same hole on the servo arm. Just like a rudder, setup with relatively-matched tension on the cables, with control takeoffs the same distance from hinge line.

Pic attached of what the servo end looks like (although not an Excelleron, it's the same idea.

Bob,

I'm curious about that motor mount - how did it work out for you? How exactly does it work?

Scott.

Haven't run it yet, but the design is VERY similar to the MK. Been around for years. Basically, two firm rubber isolators, a front and rear, on each side, are bolted on THEIR ends to spacers to keep the engine beams off the fuselage mounting parts. This permits the engine to "rock" side-to-side, but not up and down, or fore-aft, so it holds alignment. I've found them to work pretty well in the past, although not very long lived, as the rubber isolators wear QUICKLY.

I'll post findings on the motor and mount after some break in runs this weekend.

Is the rubber for the mount replaceable?

Do you think another mount could be used fairly easily?

Only with MAJOR whittling. The engine bearers are solid hardwood, 3/8" thick that glue about 2" behind the firewall, all the way to the nose plate. You COULD remove them, but it would be major roto-zip tool kinda work, and would take some patience. However, it would take a lot of nose weight out, meaning that whatever mount you went back with would probably not appreciably affect the overall balance.

Question is - What mount? The firewall is a bit narrow, and short for a Hyde-type (I think, although I don't know their mounting dimension on the 90 size)
Gator would work, maybe, but it's pretty wide. You could remove some stock by cutting it in half vertically and removing some of the backplate mounting material, but how much would be based on the engine you choose.

Without the modification, the other two type of motor mount I can see using are the MK and Dave Brown. They should be simple to get the replacement rubber isolators. Now the question is whether either one of the rubber isolators can be used as replacement on the original motor mount.

I used the Dave Brown mount with the YS 1.10 on mine.
Fits perfectly.

Tommy, How hard was it to chop all the wood out of the way?

tph1,

If use either MK or Dave Brown engine mounts, it screws rignt on to the engine mount rails, which look exactly like Areobob's photo shows. There should not be any wood to chop prior to install them.
