Turtle Report:

The rudder is covered and I have started the process of rib stitching. Basically it is similar to full scale rib stitching........a strip of reinforcing material the same width of the rib is ironed over each rib..........the stitch spacing is determined (1 3/8" in this case) and lightly marked onto the covering........I poke holes with the needle in the covering where each stitch will go (this makes it neater for me and reduces the chance of ripping the fabric)...........where there is structure in the way of the needle I drill a hole for the needle to pass through........after all the stiches are in place a strip of covering about twice the width of the rib is ironed in place (this seals and weatherproofs the holes made by the needle).

Very interesting reading. You are a dedicated scale modeler!

Thanks, but I'm a hack compared to most of the fellows who post build threads.

The rudder is stitched and the rib tapes have been ironed on.

Ready for the perimeter tape to be added. FYI, this tape is nearly 6 feet long.........this plane night need a lot more covering than I thought.

In case you're interested, Solar Tex rips lengthwise quite well. No cutting with a knife or scissors required. But across the roll, not so well. Just make a small cut at the required width and then rip away.

Thanks Steve.

I am rib stitching not for the scale detail that it provides, although that is a great benefit, but because as our planes grow in size there is a point we reach where rib stitching is required to keep the covering from lifting away from the airframe. I don't know where that point actually is and I don't intend on finding out. I have used it on a couple of third scale planes and it also helps to keep the covering tight and reduces wrinkling.

I can't imagine what it would cost to cover such a large model W/Solartex.

It cost me over $60 just to cover a 1/5 scale J-3 Cub, not counting paint.

The rudder used 3/4 of a small roll (2 meter). I think I figured 3 ten meter rolls would cover the entire airframe ......or in other words, a lot!

The half scale N-11 is a big model and along with it comes a big price tag. That's why I have accumulated bits and pieces over the past couple of years - spreading the cost over time somewhat softens the sticker shock.

TURTLE REPORT:

I have fit the servo rails and mounted the servos to them. It is very similar to my 1/3 scale N-11, so there wasn't a lot of engineering to accomplish this task. I did find that the cable guide for one of the upper elevator cables needed to be moved. I relocated both of them when I test fit the left side. I assumed that the right side would be the same - guess I was wrong........shoot, it may still be wrong. I won't know until I get the ny-rod inserted into the fuselage side cable guides and rig the final cables.........

I seen him at IWC showing off his tail feathers. Nice job Art. Your going to need a few more parts covered before you can fly it.
Side note you like this gear repair?

That would be the right side

I didn't like how the cable guides were lining up, so I cut them out and will replace with new balsa blocks. You know what they say, don't cha?

That would be the first time he lessen to me. Besides he was off playing at Dayton and Mid-Atlantic Dawn. If he drives as slow as he builds, it might be a few weeks before we hear from him.

Yes, I have on hand these servos........ Hitech HS 7950 TH (402 in/oz @ 6 Volts) . One for each elevator half and one for the rudder. And Hitech HS 7955 TG (333 in/oz @ 6 volts) one for each aileron.

I believe these to be way more than what is actually needed to fly safely. But they do come close to what is mandated by the AMA's Large Model 1 & 2 regulations.

Yes, I did stop........for a while - I had to take time out for the Dayton Dawn Patrol Rendezvous and then for the MAD Patrol at Virginia Beach. Both events were fantastic! 1800 (or so) miles and lots of flying. Then I needed time to recuperate from all that fun.......oh crap! then I had to go back to work .

I think I might be back to my old routine now, so I might just get in a little shop time in the near future.

We all have to get back our usual routine after all that fun. The Dayton Dawn Patrol was the best ever, great flying weather. It was good to see you and Rhonda again. Get to to work on the 1/2 scale.
