Hmmmm,,,let's think about this a turtle second.
You already have the 120cc, it will swing a 32" prop, a 150cc engine would be another costly investment,,,,,sounds like an easy decision to me.
Almost like a birthday present.

Work on the second wing panel has begun. Hopefully this will go a little quicker than the first one .........

I'm in this hobby when I REALLY can't afford to be, a modeler on a tight budget. So to me just having one of them engines is a dream. Some how though, I've managed to build some pretty nice 1/4 scale planes, which is about the biggest I can build anyhow without a trailer. Someday, I'll be building big boys like you guys. Ahh, someday........till then, I'll just watch the big boys play.

Hi Art.
I see that many years ago you and a group of 13 built Scratch A plane N-17's. I aguired a 1/4 scale N-17 from a friend who passed. The model never flew and when I recieved it one aileron and the V struts were missing. Do you or any of your friends possibly have a set of plans so I can finish this bird and get her to Rhinebeck this year. I hope you can help me.
I've enjoyed your 1/2 scale build, keep up the great work. I hope to get back to my Fokker 1/2 scale builds someday myself.
Thanks

Hey Tom,

Good hearing from you and welcome aboard.

Those Scratch- a-Plane N17s were great flyers! I traded mine to a friend who resides in Texas and the plans went with it (I think). That being said, here is a link where plans and/or a kit can be purchased.

Cheers,

Other than the epoxy, do you mostly use CA? Or wood glue as well? Such as Tite bond. Just curious.

I use ca and wood glue about equally. It is somewhat interchangeable for a lot of applications.....

Agreed. Sometimes a mixture of both on the same part like you did. Like I said, just curious. Some guys are hard core tite bond guys, and some don't even own any. I'm like you. Thanks.

Turtle Report:

Cap strips on now the top of the wing ...........

........ and on the bottom.

Both wings are now at the same stage of construction.

I guess I have to do some head scratching and a bit of pondering before proceeding. I need to draw up the aileron ribs - I have nothing at this time. Also need to cut and fit more parts for the top wing root section and joinery pieces.

.......take a break & smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Turtle Report:

I have poked my head out of my shell and started on the ailerons. The table isn't large enough for the whole wing, so I had to lay it at an angle........I shimmed the spars so that the trailing edge sits flat on the board and pinned the wing trailing edge to the table so things don't shift and then laid out the aileron/torque tube arrangement.

The inboard rib is the same as the wing rib tailing edge section.......each rib thereafter had to be hand fit. A bit time consuming but fruitful.

Turtle Report:

I glued in the aileron ribs - OOPS! - I forgot to add the brass tube over the torque tube I had to de-bond and remove the ribs, slide the bearing tube into place, then glue the ribs back in. Two steps forward and one step back ........I will get there eventually.

I have never built anything larger than my building board before........the chord at the outboard aileron rib is much wider than my 24 inch wide table. Jigs, fixtures and shims come in handy when building - and in some cases are mandatory, like this situation, if you want to keep the structure straight and warp free.

Turtle Report:

Got one aileron finished (less tip). There are a lot of pieces to shape, cut and glue. The balsa build up on the front of the aileron was run through the band saw after tilting the table a bit so that there would be more contact area on the tube ....... makes it a lot easier to get a better glue joint.

Need to do the other aileron next ......... and then make the aileron strap hinges from some brass strips and then fit them into the wing trailing edge. Very much like I did on my 1/3 scale N-11. Also need to make and fit a bearing block to the wing for the torque tube to fit against (in the area of the hinge) - this should be a hard wood like cherry of maple, but I might use the poplar left over from the third scale build.

The pieces are growing, both in quantity and size.

Hi Dave, thanks.

I am using brass strap hinges - bend a "U" shape - slip around the torque tube, right where the tubing has been bonded the balsa will be removed to make room for the hinge.

The ends of the "U" shape will extend to the rear spar of the wing where they will be attached with a through bolt - there will be a half moon hardwood piece to serve as a bearing block between the aileron and wing.

Clear as mud, right?

Dave, here is a side view drawing taken from my 1/3 scale N-11 plans. The half scale will be very similar.
