My Feedback: (17)
We will arrive late Wednesday and staying at the Red Roof Inn as well. Several other Okies are coming with me arriving at different times, most will be at the Red Roof Inn. I will be bring my BUSA 1/4 scale Pup & the Fokker D-VII, my flying buddy will have his SR Batteries Fokker Eindecker. We are planning to drive straight through to Dayton about 13.30 hours, we will share the driving. The last two times we were at the Dawn Patrol , Dallas and I drove straight through going home. It is not a hard drive, just long hours.

Dawn Patrol Rendezvous - September update the first
Evening, all - once again, sorry for not keeping up with this thread (let alone my suffering email inbox). The good news, for me, at least, is that I'm finally off the road! No more travel until I leave the end of the month for Dayton, so I should be able to start keeping up with this thread (and email)! I'll also (finally) be joining the second decade of the 21st century, and using one of them new-fangled "smart phones" (as soon as I get the fool thing initiated), which should help as well (or bury me completely . . .).
Everything is still on shedule (apparently we don't use the "c" in schedule at the Rendezvous - tradition), with only some tweaks to said shedule.
We currently have 73 Registered Participants (including the gang coming down from Balsa U.S.A.), representing 19 different states, bringing over 100 models - mostly evenly split between 1/4 and 1/3 scale, with a half-dozen 1/2 scales listed as well (and an assortment of other scales).
I plan on sending out individual emails to all registered participants this evening, pretty much with similar content to the following, just so everyone registered knows their status.
We've turned in our shirt order (yes, we've ordered some extras) and also sent our pilots list to the Museum.
According to the Museum's David Thomas, the grass cutting is on shedule (I'm planning on making a drive-by the weekend prior as well just to get the warm and fuzzies on that).
Full scale should have a similar turnout, or better, as 2011, over a half a hundred re-enactors had registered as of a couple weeks ago, and all other groups are reporting numbers at or better than 2011 as well.

The current daily R/C flying shedule (with a big asterisk) is:
WEDNESDAY, Sept 24th - Field Setup Day
On Wednesday the field setup (final grass cutting, safety fences completed, tents set up, etc) by the Museum should be completing. Doug and I will be arriving onsite as well (I'm planning on being there early on Wednesday, Doug's coming in right after work in the morning). We also have some early arrivals showing up on Wednesday - we'll get them set up as soon as practical (working around the field set-up completions). I'll get a bit more info on Wednesday as we get closer (which gate, etc). We'll probably have some opportunities for flying, but field setup is the primary goal for Wednesday.
No formal activities are planned for Wednesday.
THURSDAY, Sept 25th - Arrival Day
Thursday is participant arrival day - all groups have the bulk of their people coming in on Thursday, including the full-scale planes flying into the Rendezvous. The current schedule for the full-scales arriving by air is from 9:00am through 3:00pm.
R/C will be flying whenever there isn't full-scale activity ongoing - which means Thursday is pretty much ours, particularly after 3:00pm, so long as there aren't deviations to the full-scale activity (none are anticipated, but always certainly possible). We'll have the field until dark.
No formal activities other than all arrivals are planned for Thursday.

FRIDAY, Sept 26th - Media Day and Practice
New for 2014 (compared to previous Rendezvous) - Friday has been set aside as "Media Day", with the press there from 10:00am to 11:30am. Friday has also been designated as a "Practice Day", primarily for the full-scale activities.
R/C will fly whenever there isn't full-scale activity on the field - particularly from 7:00am to 9:00am, and then in between whatever "Media" or "Practice" is going on. Friday's shedule is gonna be fluid, compared to the rest of the event.
Friday evening, starting at 7:00pm is the "WWI Hangar Party" in the Early Years Gallery in the Museum itself (following a safety briefing for full-scale) - this is a major highlight of the event, with all participants getting a chance to mingle AND take in the Museum (which will remain open for us until around 10:00 or so).
SATURDAY, Sept 27th - Public Visit Day 1
R/C will start flying at 7:00am, and then alternate with full-scale as follows:
R/C Flying 0700 to 0900
Full Scale 0900 to 1100
R/C Flying 1100 to 1200
Full Scale 1200 to 1400
R/C Flying 1400 to 1500 (anticipate a special mission during this session)
Full Scale 1500 to 1700 (end of formal public portion of the Rendezvous)
R/C Flying 1700 until dark.
There was talk of trying to get some sort of on-field catering Saturday evening, but currently the plan is to fend for ourselves (too many logistical issues trying to set it up on field).
I'm very much looking forward to the Saturday evening flying session!
After Dark (or thereabouts) there are tentative plans to show a movie on-field.
SUNDAY, Sept 28th - Public Visit Day 2
Sunday's flying shedule is the same as Saturday's, excepting the evening R/C Portion. Instead, it will be time for the Dawn Patrol Banquet (inside Museum), starting around 6:30pm.
MONDAY, Sept 29th - Departure Day
Monday is the sheduled day for all participant departures. Yes, in between the full-scale departures I expect we'll get some adhoc R/C flying in as well.

THE BIG ASTERISK
The planned flying shedule is VERY much dependent upon Mother Nature, who has seen fit the last the couple of Rendezvous to give us rain, fog, and very low ceiling. While rain affects us all, the full-scales are very weather-sensitive when it comes to fog and low ceiling.
The ENTIRE flying shedule, therefore, is in very soft pencil and chalk, and subject to shuffling as necessary. As a for instance, we had our Friday morning pilots meeting in 2009 at 1:30 in the afternoon, due to the low ceiling cancelling all full-scale flying in the morning!
(Below: Billy Thompson flying the Saturday morning fog patrol in 2009 - believe it or not, there's a really, really huge museum directly across the field hiding in the fog!):
Stay fueled and stay ready is the plan for R/C.

One more quick note:
If you want to explain what this event is all about, here's a little promo video the Museum put together and posted on You Tube on the event:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usY6qpcaoAc
The R/C info is brief, and mostly accurate (excepting that 1/8 scale bit - we probably have maybe one plane showing up in that scale!!).
Best regards,

Lee,
I'm making a layout of the 2014 venue (on my computer to scale), and I'm using Dave Thomas' napkin drawing of the 2014 venue (I hope you have seen it, I'm sure you have). He has the RC runway moved from the original north-south direction back to the original site of east-west. Is that in agreement with you (maybe we could discuss this on the phone if you like?)

(Can I get a shirt too?)

And I've finally arrived (well, crash landed, more likely) in the 21st century, and have officially retired my veteran "Star Trek" flip phone, and now have a new-fangled iPhone that I'll need to learn to use . . . old dawgs and new tricks is SUCH a bad combination . . . Anyhoo - should help me keep up (a little) with everyone (including work . . . it's their phone, anyway!!).
Best regards,

MAN OH MAN! Its getting closer and closer! Less than a week now.
For those who might want to experiment with prop sizes, but don't want to spend a lot of money buying different props to try out, I have a small supply of PK Plus and PK props in 24 to 28 inch range with various pitches.
24x6, 26x6 I have several of each size......and then there are several other diameters and pitches......check with me when you arrive in Dayton and maybe I can fix you up.
I'll try and get some pictures later.
Cheers,
Art
