Hi Guys
some great looking cats here, a friend and I are about to start building 2 over here in the UK,they will be powered by the Saito Fg90r3.
We have a question on the vertical fuel tank position on the plan, have you guys followed the plan and positioned it vertically or have you hade any mods for it to be as a conventional horizontal tank position ?
Regards
Toby

Vertical fuel tank
Hi Guys,
I HAVE THE FIBERGLASS FUSE VERSION OF THE BATES WILDCAT. I installed my fuel tank vertically as per the planes and have had absolutely no problems with it after flying for several years. It works great that way with my Zenoah GT80.

Thanks for all your replies guys, some great looking builds going on, I'm hoping the 90r3 will pull it around quite nicely.
denny , your fuel supply with vertical tank all ok in vertical/ inverted positions e.g. Loops rolls etc ?

I don't know if you guys have seen it yet, but Robart is now offering "slim wheels". They are the perfect width for a Wildcat, and will be much lighter than the Glennis wheels, if you happen to have those. At this point they only have five inch, but their website says more sizes are coming.

Hey guys im joining here. I got the plans on the way for this bird. I do have a question any idea where I can get a canopy and a cowling? I was given a email and number to a guy but haven't had much luck.

Wildcat Canopy and Cowl parts
Hi Tfarmer. The Wildcat canopy and cowl were originally sold by Leo Spychalla. ([email protected]) He just sold the molds for the fuselage, canopy and cowl to Darren Bitzer ([email protected]. I met both men this summer and confirmed this info. Darren plans to make all these parts available for the Wildcat. Try both these men, but probably Darren first.

I will be making slow progress on my Bates Wildcat over the coming year... I've "sort of" installed the Saito 90cc triple... I will be making scale exhaust pipes/outlets and to make room for the Keleo collector ring, my firewall had to be installed behind the fuselage front. To do that, I had to cut the firewall in two pieces. And now I have discovered that I still need more room for the ring, so will need to router a major portion of the front fuselage ring away to allow the engine to reside in the scale location (in relation to prop hub) while allowing sufficient room for the collector ring NOT to touch. It is difficult to tell from the photos, but with the collector ring mounted, the engine is NOT seated against the mount stand-offs... because the ring is touching the front of the fuselage.

I DO believe this engine will be enough for the Bates Wildcat. While it may not fly like a pattern plane, I am confident the power produced with a 22x10 3-blade Mejzlik will provide very scale performance. I have fully run-in the engine on the bench and it performs beautifully. The sound is fantastic!

To RichardGee, My son Zach has been flying the Bates Wildcat for this past season on the Saito FG-84 3-cylinder with Ray English modifications. Bolly 22 X 12 3-blade scale prop. More power than you can imagine! Temperature probe and telemetry on the top center cylinder. Temps have to be around 290 - 300 F for good safe continuous running. This requires a big open dump hole roughly 3 X 5 in the bottom center of the cowl, plywood baffles between all the cylinders, and louvers opened up on the top in a scale type fashion. Failure to do this will result in full throttle temps of 320 - 330 F and a seized engine, many broken connecting rods, and a dead stick landing. We know this for a fact. So keep it cool. Open things up! It has to breath or you will be sorry. Run 15:1 oil, preferably a 4-stroke blend like Morgan. After that initial engine failure he borrowed my engine an has now had great success and about 30 flights logged. Now I don't know when I will ever get my engine back or if I get his repaired one. I guess we will figure that out someday. Leo

Jerry Bates F4F build
Well, She Fly's !!!
Went out early and put the maiden flight on her. My wife took some cool pictures, and supported me during this whole project. I would like to say " it went off without a hitch" or "It took no trim at all" and this one is good, "it flies like it's on rails".... and so on. Anyway, I am pretty happy, just need to finish the painting and weathering. With a few more "tweaks" it will be a solid airplane. I lost my bottom hatch on the second circut , I did find it. I need to figure a better way to hold it on than the eight rare earth magnets.
The flight was pretty good. I had to put in some left trim and some up as well. The engine ran good. The mid range isn't all that great yet, Three tanks through. I asked Denny over at RCSB what prop he was running and I now have a 23X10.
Pitch was a bit sensitive so I think I need a little more nose weight, I landed with full flaps, and it rolled out pretty nice. Just need to take things apart to get a good look around to see if everything is still good and tight.

I finally bought my Jerry Bates 1.5 scale Wildcat and was wondering if you by chance have a parts list for balsa strip and sheet you ended up getting for your build. I can’t find anything online even talking about the required balsa supplies. Just wanted to have most of what I need when my plans come in. thanks!

These are the notes I made going through the drawings. And my final purchase.
So far I have build the fuse, elevator, rudder and started one wing. Not missing anything so far.

AWSOME! Thank you very much for the quick reply and the helpful list ClausBN! Still very surprised the plans don’t come with any kind of parts list for these builds! Thanks again my friend
