Irwina I will post a pick of mine when I get home but I wrapped the fill tube around a bit inside the fuse above the fuel tank and use a rubber band around the tank to hold it down. Like flymore said the top pops off quick, plus it gives you a reason to look at all the things to make sure nothing you can prevent is going to give you trouble.

Hi guys.
Merry christmas and a happy new year from Denmark. :-)
How much is your planes weighing? Mine is still coming together but I expect it to tip the scale at 22-23 lbs or 10.0 - 10.5 kgs. Quite a bit more than the recommended max 19 lbs or 8.6 kgs. What do you think...?

Nicolai I have not weighted mine yet. I have it all together and ran the engine for the first time last night. I will weight it tonight and yet you know. Is it the batteries that are putting it that heavy. I don't think it will matter but it would be nice to see what others are coming in at.
Splais two questions. Did you break the engine in with the Beila prop or with a regular two blade. I ask because I ran mine last night and it seemed to struggle to get up to rpm. I did not check it and I only ran it about 30 seconds. And what size spinner did you use?

nicolene I got a chance to weight mine today and I was I little surprised, mine came in at 20lbs and 6ozs. I still have to add graphics, a retractable tailwheel if I decide to add one, and I still want to go through her and add glue to some of the joints. That was also with a full 16oz fuel tank. I was thinking that it would come in under 20 fully ready. I would also like to see what others had come in at.

Mine came in at 20lbs. with robart electric retracts (3), the cockpit kit + pilot figure, a VVRC 40cc twin, and enough lead to make it balance. It blasts off in about 50 feet of ground run, glides beautifully and lands like a dream.

Thanks everybody for the information an insight. It is very much appreciated :-)
It seems all your planes are between 20-21 lbs. My expected 23 lbs is a little heavy as i thought. My plane is to be powered by a brushless motor and i am going with a larger motor than recommended because i would like to swing a big scale prop. My lipos will be bigger as well and I have installed all 3 retracts and the full depth cockpit. Maybe I should not be surprised by the weight... :-)
I dont need a glider, but of course I dont want the plane to be impossible to fly and land either. Do you think there is enough margin in the airframe for it to be reasonably mannered with the expected 23 lbs? Or should I try to cut weight in my setup?

Oh and another thing... :-)
How much lead did you need to balance your planes? I would like to avoid lead completely, and that is part of the reason I am going with a bigger motor.

Don't know if it will be mild mannered at 23lbs but it will fly with enough horse power. I was worried at 20lbs but my concerns were unfounded as it doesn't fly like its heavy. As for the nose weight: I didn't weigh it but I put a 1"X1"X4" chunk of lead on top of the crankcase of the VVRC 40 twin. It balances 1/2" tail heavy compared to the recommended CG location.

There is plenty of margin and 23 pounds is still feather light for the big Hangar 9 Jug. I've seen the smaller Yellow P-47 go nearly 30 pounds and still fly just fine. In my opinion the H9 actually performs better with a bit more weight and 25 pounds would probably be ideal for my style of flying assuming there is enough power to haul the weight. (In other words a whole lot more than the recommended 30cc's.) Just my .02 cents of course, others may have differing opinions.

Engine choice
Hi all!
Subscirbed!
I am seriously considering selling my .60 top Flite mustang, almost new and built with DLE 20 and getting this bird. A few questions pop up.
I have read enough of this thread to know -
1. DLE 55ra requires about a pound of lead on the nose.
2. Robart electrics seem to work OK
3. Some have had shipping issues
4. The bigger the Engine, the better
This being said, I have a somewhat small field with 2 paved runways about 250ft each. I owned this plane in the razorback version, and like most here, found that it flew better with the weight. I was able to nail my approaches and allow the plan to sit it's behind on the runway.
Would a ZP-62 fit in this plane? It is only 4 ounces difference from the 55ra with 1 pound lead on the nose.
Are there alternate retracts that can be used on a budget? Since the price of the plane has come down a bit, it may be possible for me to squeeze this in without $400 retracts.
General thoughts on the size of runway and this plane?
Thanks guys!
Best,
Chris

Chris If you could get one, they are no longer available from Horizon, a 62 would be good with the weight you will need. I have about 12ozs with my dle55ra and I have no spinner yet. I will be able to take some of that off. Now I do have not have a retractable tail wheel yet. My shipping was GREAT and the Robarts work great! As for the runway if it lands anything like my H9 150 Mustang I will not need much runway to land on. Wingspan also offers retracts for this plane.

Well ran the first tank on the ground just making sure the engine is ok. With the Biela 20x10 four blade I had over 24lbs of thrust on a digital fish scale. WOW! This plane is going to have unlimited vertical. Just need a nice day to get her out to the field for the maiden. Anything I need to be careful of on the takeoff or landings. Does it have any nose over issues on take off or landing that I need to be careful of?

No Dave but I can get it for you. It is a wee bit cold for us Southerners. LOL the low is 15 tonight and only a high of 32 tomorrow, but no worries it is going to be back in the mid 60s by this weekend. I can say that the longer I ran it, the better it got. If I had to guess I would say in the mid to low 6K. I will get it and let you know as soon as I can.

I am sure the Rimfire is a good choice for this plane. Seen videos on the internet where it goes very well and fast in a p-47 150 on 12S with a 22x11. What prop are you planning on using?
I hope you are all well in the cold over there in the US and Canada. Here in Denmark it is very warm for the season. We havent had snow yet. A year ago it was minus 18C. These days it is plus 5-10C. Very strange weather....

My plan is to use the Eflite Power 360 on 12S with a Biela 20x14x4. I wanted a big, scaleish prop and it just need a big, heavy motor.I am sure the Rimfire is a good choice for this plane.
