Your work is almost beyond description. Icoud never put this much into a model and then fly it. Iwould be terrified beyond belief to fly it and totaly crushed if something happened to it. man I get upset for days even when I crash an arf. My deepest sympathies for your loss. I look forward to seeing this completed, I've seen your Mossy and it too is amazing. I also lost alot of posting here before so now I do all my writing in word and then cut and paste.

I started cutting the cockpit area today and I'm having a hard time finding pilot figures that wont cost me
so much $$ the ones I used for the Mossie were 1/7th scale and you'll see him in the photo he is just a bit big
espicaly the reo his area is very small so they make a1/9th scale american figure but only one I'll have to do something to make them look different.
So I was thinking use GIJOE"S butI went to several stores and looked but for some reason the NEW GIJOE'S are ninjas or some other crazy charters and there is not one that's a trooper that looks like any of are armed forces not army, navy, marine, air force, or special forces???
I don't get it what has the toy industry become I guess mom's don't want little joey playing army man any more it might damage his fragile egg shell mind!!
YEA like there's no other violence on TV and you wouldn't want to little joey growing up to become one of our brave young men in the armed forces?
What a shame!!
If I'm missing something about finding these figures someone set me straight!

RE: SCRATCH BUILT P-38M NIGHT LIGHTNING
Alright back again I've been working on the spinners and took the advice from some
of my followers and gave the spinner cone more space where the prop comes out
So it won'e rub or hit making it less likely to crack.
I was looking at a spinner that I had on a much smaller engine and they have post
that stop the prop from moving keeping them in the same position and not letting
them hit the cone, I was going to do this same thing w/ three screws sticking out
coming through the hub.
But I thought why not make three screws thread into the back side of the prop
or just go into holes to keep the prop from moving?
If they were drilled in the same places it would remain balanced, if they were drilled
and taped it would be much harder to change props but holes drilled in the same spots
could be done a head of time so it would be easier to change props.
the screws would act as alignment pins fitting into holes in the back of the prop.
Any of you vets out there think that this sounds like it will work?
I could really use some help here thoughts and comments please.
Here are some photos with screws just placed where I thinking of putting them but
NOT these screws they were just handy for the photo.
And also spinner number two just screwed to the hub in primer.
and spinner one wet sanded it had to much orange peel and will be shot again.
any help would be helpful thank you

Hi Bruce,
No experience with this but, my 2 cents.
I would be very leary of drilling into the props, for this reason.
If the structural integrity of a prop blade is compromised, were it to let loose it would become a missle.
Just seems suspect to me.
Glad your back,
Kevin

Bruce, I wouldnt worry about locating the props to the backplate with screws. Once the prop nut is done up the props wont move on the back plate. If you want a location pin then just glue some dowels into the back plate like those shown on the plastic spinner in your picture.
Following both builds with interest!

Bret thanks for responding on this you are the only one so far that has given me any feed back I had planded to make some cuts for gripps on the back plate and run a brass sleve through the hole the prop shaft pass through for some extra resistance to ware.
I like the idea of gluing on the location pins but what glue to use here? and what to make them out of?
I've not gone any farther and was just thinking on this!
Thank you again,
Bruce

Yes the prop will move. It will slip on the back plate because it is smooth. Just the same way that Du-Bro back plate has the ridges that the prop sit on, if you can, cut some on your back plate or glue in the stop pins just like the ones on the Du-Bro spinner. The prop will slip when you go from idle to full power. Torque will cause it to slip and it will shatter the spinner. Tightening just the prop nut to hold the prop will not do.

91zulu...I think I'm going w/ 3 - 1/2"long counter sunk screws comming from the back of the plate tapped through leving a stop for each blade and a star washer for a grip behind the prop, this should hold it in place.
I'll post some photos when I do this and give a step by step to show how I'm doing this.

91zulu... the star washer being made of steal should dig in to the back plate made of resin and the prop made of composit materail once it is tightend up and there will be the three screws one in front of each blade that will stick up about 1/4" or so!

Ok are you going to secure the star washer on to the back plate some how so that it will not move?

91 zulu ....Check this out!
Alright I'm continuing to work on the spinners it a slow process because you have
to put it together and take it apart a WHOLE LOTbut it's comming together.
I went to my local hardware store and I love this guy because he has all of the things the big stores don't have and knows what your talking about, anyway
I cal these things STAR WASHERS I don't know the real name but this guy knew what I was talking about try that at a DEPOT SHOP and see what you getmost of the time I here oh man I don't work in this dept. so I don't know!!
Sorry that's me raving again,These things will help to keep the prop from spinning on the back plate plus I have added three screws coming from behind the back plate and acting as stops in front of each blade.
have also removed some more material from around the spinner cone so it doesn't touch the blades still some more details and painting and then I will have to drill out the main hole for the shaft through the back plate and put a brass insert in there to help w/ the wear.
So check out the progress slow as it may be,
Bruce

Thank you Casey ... Do you or anyone else think this is dangerous? using the screws as stops I've had one guy tell me he thinks it is?

RE: SCRATCH BUILT P-38M NIGHT LIGHTNING
If the screws are locked in and would not back out, it should be good. How ever the star washer I do not like. It may bite in uneven and cause the nut to loosen, then BAM!. I would have used something like 60 grit sand paper glued onto the back plate. Cut a circle a little bit bigger than the center of the prop. The screws, locked them in with JB Weld in the back plate and put a sleeve over the threads sticking up. I would feel better with the prop resting against something smooth not grooved. As it is now the prop may slip. I have used sandpaper before on plastic spinners an it worked.

RE: SCRATCH BUILT P-38M NIGHT LIGHTNING
you might consider shrink tubing over the screws to smooth them out, and a circle of wall board sanding screen between prop and back plate. The sanding screen has grit on both sides.

Hey great ideas guys I like the sanding paper or screen I thing either would work and also the shrink tube over the screws once I put those in they will have a drop of thin CA put on the threads and will never come out.
Or the other thing I was thinking if I can find it was nylon screws, not sure if they make them that small, I could always make my own w/ a die and a nylon rod if I can find something like that!
Thanks for the help these are great ideas and I'll be using them,
Bruce
