P-51D olive drab paint schemes
I've got my Brian Taylor P-51D painted a beautiful olive drab finally. The only problem is now I don't know exactly the correct, scale WWII paint scheme for olive drab P-51D. Anyone have any images of olive drab P-51D paint schemes (preferably D-Day invasion stripes version)??????

Chas, this one should be easy. Do a google image search for P-51 or Mustang and you'll probably find a bunch. You might check out www.eaglestrikeproductions.com for some decals of a particular scheme you like. Also, check out the plastic model section of your local hobby shop. Last but not least, take a look at www.mustangsmustangs.com.

Ther are may places to look. As mentioned google is a good place to start. www.dogpile.com is another, especially if you know the particular unit that you would like to represent. If you want books, there are a bunch that are available on the Mustang and the units that flew them. www.HistoricAviation.com Has a very good selection of current titles available.
The photo's submitted by paladin are good ones but represent a post d-day scheme. The invasion stripes where removed from the top of allied aircraft by sept of 1944. Especially as units moved operations onto the continent. The stripes where only required during the initial phases of the invasion but retained on the under surfaces until the end of that year. But some aircraft undoubtly carried them on the undersides until the end.
Good luck and have fun !!! [&:]

RE: P-51D olive drab paint schemes
Thank you all very much for the information. The pics are great and really give me some great images to save and print as references whilst airbrushing my precious warbird. I wanted to build the aircraft as scale as possible, but since this is my first short kit (and first Brian Taylor kit) I found that I am not quite ready nor do I have the resources to go "all out" on the wonderful scale details that make the P-51D the glorious machine that it is. The other thing I wanted to accomplish is to build a decent tribute to all of the WWII veterans that served. I don't think I'll EVER get tired of watching their stories on television or reading about their battles and experiences. Wow have times changed!!
I have been researching and pontificating my P-51D paint scheme for over a year now. I think I have decided on invasion stripes on the bottom only, white alpha-numerics & aircraft serial numbers, and wht/blk stars & bars.
The only thing left is nose art and squadron insignia. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I'll be continuing my search for a good, cool looking squadron insignia and nose art. I know mustangsmustangs.com may be the best place to research nose art, but squadron insignia requires a high resolution, high detail image in order to get the insignia looking good on the aircraft.
Keep the great pics coming and "CHECK YER SIX!!!!".

Do you have any pics of your plane? I would love to see her in her prime
I have always been partial to the white nose of the FG (can't recall). The contrast of the white with the dark olive drab always was appealing to me though some may think that it is too simple. Looks good with invasion stripes though.

RE: P-51D olive drab paint schemes
Well at the moment I do have the model airbrushed with Midwest Hot Fuel Proof Dope (Olive Drab of course). So for now the model is simply olive drab and that's it. This evening I'll be printing out some of the great pictures that you guys sent in this thread. I may even get to stenciling some alpha-numerics on the fuse sides...
Here's some images of the construction of this model. I choose to build up the fuse, but I know Bob Holman offers a glass fuse. Next time around I'll definately go with the glass fuse!

Chas_97, If you are serious about this i would get the two Signal/Publications pubs: P-51 Walk-Around (#7) and the P-51 Mustang In Action (#45). This two pubs have a number of scale full color pictures, several that are in Olive Drab. One of the best looking is "Hurry Home Honey" from the 364th FS.

Now, did anyone see any black and white stars and bars in any of the previous photos? Anyone have any evidence that black was used as the background color, along with white stars and bars?
The only black background on U.S. insignia that I am aware of is on modern aircraft that are using "low viz" markings but the stars and bars are not white in this instance. They are the color of the surounding aircraft skin with just the black background frame painted.

RE: P-51D olive drab paint schemes
Thanks for sharing those awesome images Steve!
Ask and ye shall receive...
Now the only hard part is trying to narrow this HUGE selection of shemes down. I've got to figure out a way to check out the "Hurry Home Honey"
bird. I wanted to do a stand off scheme of "Section Eight" (can be seen as an actual P-51 survivor on MustangsMustangs.com), but it's not an olive drab scheme and my heart is set on olive drab.
When they bury me I want my casket airbrushed olive drab...there's just something about color and the mustang together!
Alright I'm going to go take a cold shower...
Thanks guys,
Chas

Hey Steve,
The only image in this thread that MAY have black around the star is the first one, Isabel III. But you're right all the others definately have navy blue around the star. You know what that means...I'm not done buying paint! Gotta order some Navy/dark blue! It's always something. Thanks again for the
great pics. They are going to help out alot.

The first picture is overly dark. In the first photo, as dark as it is, I agree it looks black. I brightened the picture several times in Paintshop Pro and you can definitely tell that the background is at least as dark as insignia blue but definitely NOT black.

RE: P-51D olive drab paint schemes
Yeah, that's what I figured. I'm glad to know this. Although I left out several scale details such as panel lines and rivets I do want my paint scheme to be historically accurate because you can see the paint scheme 30ft. away (and probably not the rivets). I WANT to add ALL scale details, but this is my first short kit and I'm ready to get this guy in the air where it belongs.
