RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi Guys
I like the soft mount because the 62 is a thumper compaired to some of the newer technology engines and when tightened up it is all most solid it just takes off the crack so to speek. So hear are the dim's I have on mine from the face of the firewall left corner top/bottem .6 right side top/bottem .4 and I would eather drill to safty wire or use browm lock-tite. hear is a pic of the over all with the scale right on C/L.
Hope this helps

Hey guys,
Anyone have any idea of the abolute max weight at which this bird would still fly?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Hi guys,
Decided to fabricate and install the hinge flaps before I fiberglass the wing and make the bezels. I use Glad cling wrap to lay up the fiberglass on...stretch to the shape you want and tape it down with scotch tape, then a coat of resin, and layer up the glass. Releases effortlessly from the fiberglass and balsa.

I modified the rear area of the fuselage so the Seirra TW retract would work. I had to cut the base of the rudder torque rod, the bottom of the stab support, and former #9A for it to have it's full travel movement. It doesn't seem as if I will have to change any of the pushrods. It's just below the pushrod holes when in the upright position. Now I just need to build the bottom around it and then beef it up. The bottom from former #9A and #9B will be molded fiberglass instead of carved balsa. I'll make a mold out of stryrafoam and then just cut out for the TW and the Tail hook. I'll make a second layer of glass for the gear doors. Did anyone else use a Seirra TW retract?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Gibbs,
A pal of mine used the Sierra t.w. in his Ziroli which looked really nice, but he promptly bent the flat plate with the holes in it when the tail of his bird came to rest on it after it had tipped up on the nose during a taxi run. It seemed like kind of a weak point when we analyzed it, as none of us thought it should have bent from what seemed like not-too-hard of a settle on the rear wheel. Pretty sure he's gotten it fixed and hasn't had any further problems, but I guess I would say try to be kind of gentle on the thing, as that plate will bend if not. Sure is a nice looking unit.

thanks for the pix of your tailwheel door geometry. I've been tinkering with it for a few days and still have not got it worked out yet. I'll post a pic or two when I get it figured out.
Thanks and keep up the good work everyone!

Got the flap hinge panels made and have mounted them on the right wing. The front panel will be kept in place with a spring and just be moved with the wing when it folds. The center hinge panel will be operated with a bell crank attached to the locking piston....that's next! I have decided to use the Marine's Dream color scheme (mostly for the pretty lady on the cowl). Does anyone know where you can get decals?

Thanks Winston,
Got in contact with Vikkie at getstencils and they can help with dry transfers and stencils. Prices are great too. I completed the linkage for the right wing hinge panel. It works great. Short video at [link=http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/Corsair-Hinge]Hinge Panel[/link]

Nice job on the hinge panels. I was wondering how I was going to do them and your design looks interesting.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks rw,
A lot of head scratching there. I have just completed the installation of the front hinge panel. It just slides along the wing when it is folding. I was originally going to use a spring to keep the tension on it but ended up using orthodontist elastics (elastics for braces). Works really well. I will harden and glass the part of the wing that it slides over to keep it from denting the balsa whe I'm finishing the wing. Well, now to install the hinge panels on the left wing and hook up the OSA Wingman fold sequencer and watch it all work together ... can't wait!

They are of a Goodyear FG-1D what flew in the Baa Baa Black Sheep movie and TV series. It was the one that always got shot down - it was rigged with a smoke system. It's undergoing restoration at the Tri-State Warbird Museum in Cincinnati Oh.
There's more pictures and video on my [link=http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u221/rwright142/]PhotoBucket[/link] website (Corsair and Corsair Graveyard folders) and you're welcome to them. I need to get some more videos up there too, but I've been busy lately.
Enjoy and hope they can help someone.

I am about to solder the clevis that came with the kit on the 4-40 rod for the rudder and wondered if anybody used a different clevis or if everyone thinks this is the way to go? What kind of clevis did you use on your threaded end of the pushrods? I was thinking of using heavy duty bolt through ball links.

Since I didn't get any quick replies I did as you and went by the plans. Thanks for the reply! Now I'm building again.

first I don't think ther is enough room for the ball links, but once you have your puch rods in and are satsfide with the throws I would ca the plastic ( nylon rod horn) and I set mine out at the max and still have more thro than calld for.
Hope this helps

Hi guys,
I am painting my bird in the tri-color scheme. I am ordering my paint and was wondering for those of you that have painted a TF Giant Corsair, would a pint of each be enough?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I have painted larger planes than the Giant Corsair with one color and used a quart and had some left over. A pint should be plenty if you paint it like a professional paints cars. They don't worry about it being covered so the paint is glossy or at it's final stage. What they do is apply a couple light coats and the paint seems really dull. Then they use clear coat which brings out the color. I didn't understand this so I watched as one did a paint job. He supprised the heck out of me when he said he was done with the color because it looked bad. Then the next day I went back and he clear coated it and boy was it beautiful. I don't know what the method he used was called but he uses much less paint than we do. Now I follow what I just explained and I save a bunch of money on paint. Remember the quality of the paint means everything. Always use a 2 part paint and thin it down so there isn't hardly any color and thats his trick. Then he sprays it on. It doesn't matter whether you use gloss or flat clear coat it will still work. The flat clear coat will give it the weathered look.
Hope this helped,
Barry
Question???
I am going to be starting on my center section of the wing soon and have heard about having to adjust the height or depth of the rails for the gear to rest on so gear doors will work. Will someone tell me what they mean and a few pictures would help.
Thank you
