RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
"both 6 volt batteries"?
Do you have dual flight packs for redundancy, or are you talking about one rx pack and one ignition pack?
IF it's dual rx batteries and you were trying to charge them both at the same time, that is mostl likely the problem. You're lucky they didn't blow up the cells as well and that can happen with NiCD/NiMH as well as the other chemistries.
The issue is that the switches used on our models only cut the positive lead from the battery to the rx, not the ground lead. So if you try to charge both packs simulaneously without disconnecting them from the rx, there is a common ground between the batteries through the rx power buss.
There are some chargers which will deal with what's known as the "common ground issue" but not many of 'em since most use low side sensing rather than high side sense, so the common ground between the batteries confuses the charger and you'll get results similar to what you've got. I've seen guys post that "I've done this for years with no problem", well maybe so but sooner or later it'll bite you. I've an acquaintence who'd done his NiMH's with two separte chargers "for years" until one night one of the NiMH cells exploded sending the bottom of the case out of the model, just missed his wife, across the room, through a picture on the wall and the sheetrock behind it lodging in one of the wall studs. Oh, the model was on fire as well.....
When I asked him why he'd done such a thing, his response was "I've always done it that way before and never had a problem".
If you DON"T have dual rx packs, or that charger (which I'm not familiar with but suspect it's a low side sense unit) can handle the common ground issue, then disregard the above and look for some other problem.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I think you nailed it Zeeb. I forgot about that. It's a Hobbico Accu-Cycle Elite that charges two packs. It is two 6V NiCds with two switches on the receiver. Ignition has a third battery. I knew about that problem a while back when I had a different plane with the same power setup. I had to charge them separately. When I restarted the charger, it didn't complain until I started charging the second battery. Then I started that battery first, and it still complained when started charging the other battery. It should have registered in my head !! I guess this means I can't blame my wife ?? Nahhhhh. That's still my story !!
Thanks Zeeb,

Hay Zeeb
Never seen it explained like that but the picture I get is funny
But I have read to meany stories like that about all of our battery types, So I guess that is why I go with the KISS plan and go with single packs just higher amps.

Nick,
Glad I could offer a possible solution to the problem. One other thing I'd do now that it's happened is change out the batteries, they may or may not be okay but considering how much money, time and effort you have in the model it seems a small price to pay to ensure you've got good batteries in the bird.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I have my own thread but it seems like nobody is posting the start of a build. Is there anyone out there that hasn't finished theirs? I would like to see others building instead of looking in the previous posts to find anything. It seems now this is just a chat room.

Hi Guys, I have been watching this thread now for about 7 months and have been building a giant scale TF Corsair over the winter. It really has started to be just too much for me cost wise and am wondering if there is any one interested in buying me out. I am about 80% done structure wise and have the retracts and a G62. I don't want to make this a classifed ad so if there is any interest or questions please contact me at [email protected]

To all on this thread
Yea I have been on this thread sence 6 of 05 but I joined out of desperation (I needed help) so I also say thanks for the kind words. In my desperation I have learned a great deal as I now have a great flying Corsair, and if the weather and days off from work ever get together I will be great to fly this season.
For the new guys to the thread all I can tell you is if you have a question don't be afraid to ask it. Becouse as I see it the only dumb question is the one that DOES NOT get ask. I konw some of the guys have moved on but I see they are still lurcking in the background and will most likely give you great ansures.

Sorry you feel this thread has gone to the dog's, but I think its just warbirds have lost some faver, and as far as your therads are concerned you are doing a good job with your builds and getting great advice, So just keep it up, and if you have a question you don't get a an ansure you can live with, ask it hear for some secound opinons.
You know I follow your therads from the PM;s

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
OK Bob,
Here is one. I am starting to build the wing tip panels and need to know if there is and angle gauge for dihedral. Here is what I found in the kit and it seems to match the picture in the instruction manual. Of course as you know well the panel is built upside down so tell me if this picture is correct. If not tell me what you did please.
Thanks a lot,
Barry

I am with Tbolt build it perpendicular to the spar, but just tack it in place. If your going to add gear doors (depending on dia.of your wheels you may have to move the aft section of the rib out board) see page 16 center # 3
When you add the the outher spar make sure the ends are square and perpendicular from you buildind board.
Hpoe this helps
