Conachen's #1 Corsair
Yes, I did get Jim's #1 Corsair. I have a friend doing the engine ( Quadra 100), servos, retracts and scale tailwheel install for me and it is a bit behind schedule. I was hoping to have it ready for this weekend's event in Deland, Fl but that isn't going to happen. It actually might be ready but I won't have had a chance to fly it. Unless something very unusual occurs, it will fly next week.
It is a copy of Joe Tobul's plane.

Joe Tobul
Yes, sadly I do know. I had called his son's office to ask about some pictures of Joe's plane the Friday before he crashed - at the Celebrate Freedom Festival air show in Midland, SC on Nov.10, 2002.

Here's mine... a Jamara 60 sized stand-off scale, repainted with Tamiya spraycans and finished with TopFlight matte topcoat for fuel proofing. Uses an ASP 91 engine. Clothed USN pilot from 'Dragon Models' for good measure!

Question about Conachen's Corsair
NoGuts_NoGlory:
I have a question about Conachen's Corsair. Does the airframe have raised rivets? From the photos on his site it looks like it does.

phayd, I saw the nice photo of the CAF #530 Corsair on your post. Here is the my version of the same plane from VMF-312 the Checkerboards.
Ziroli Corsair, 36#, Brison 5.8, flies great. I flew it at Bomber Field last September. It also sports a three piece wing for easy transportation.

Question about Conachen's Corsair
Hi Kirk,
Yes it has raised rivets. Here is the link to his website where Jim has a lot of detailed pictures of the parts of his Corsair.

Corsairs have both raised rivets, and flush. I would say most are flush from the real Corsairs I've seen......
There's also many, many, many screws; both flathead and phillips........

My first Corsair ( the one in front), which is now 7 years old, is a DynaFlite FunScale 40 Corsair with Saito .50 and Hobbico mech. rotating retracts. This was my first warbird, and made the transition to the Top Flight version much easier. Corsair behind it is owned by Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, AKA Kalamazoo Air Zoo, and is a former EAA/ Oshkosh Grand National Champion Warbird. Unfortunately, insurance coss have become so high that the full scale one no longer flies. It had flown the day of the picture

My second Corsair, this one is the Top Flight Gold Edition, with many scale mods. The Top Flight kit does not build into a very scale Corsair right out of the box: scale outlines need to be modified, particularly rudder and wing tips. M.G. holes have been added (or would that be subtracted?), scale exhaust pipes (barely visible), receiver antennna is in scale location and mast has been added. This is MonoKoted, but a very scale scheme of a U.S.S. Bunker Hill based F4U-1D. Weighed only 8 3/4 lbs with Saito .72 power, Robart retracts. The Saito swung a M.A, 3 blade 12 x 6 for very scale looking flights and almost trainer like landings.
I have 2 more Top Flight Corsairs under construction, one is only waiting for warm weather, other will be ready by summer. Both have fuselage modified to more scale looking area behind cowl flaps, which will also greatly improve engine cooling. I also have smaller electric ones under construction, have an old Jemco kit, and an even older Scale Model Products kit (simular to D&B kit, only lighter).

Rivets
Phayd,
For rivet detail, most either use a full scale bird found close by (usually resting in a museum) or one of the better brands of plastic scale models - most are in 1/48th scale.
This visual combined with a 3 view for panel lines is a good start.
There are some good web sites also, but I have never found good rivet info there.
For a truly awesome plastic model try this link:

Some good general info most already know try this:

race 57
Some beautiful birds there fella's........as far as models, I haven't built a corsair yet (not enough experience to tackle it just yet), I'm putting the finishing touches on a Global P-40. Anyhow, thought you might enjoy some in-cockpit photos of Race 57 I took a couple years ago.
http://hometown.aol.com/js4corsair/racer57.html
And contrary to what somebody posted earlier, race 74 is not owned by Bob Odegarrd, but is located at his facility.

Another TF Gold Edition
Here is my newest Top Flight Gold Edition (60 size) Corsair. It has just been completed, never flown. Scheme is from another U.S.S. Bunker Hill based F4U-1D (note lack of lateral canopy braces). Rudder has been re-contoured for more accurate scale outline. Fuselage also has scale mods in cowl flap area (fuselage is rounded inward) which also aids in engine cooling. It is MonoKoted, and has Major Decals and home made arrows and numbers. Robart retracts with RoboStruts, functional flaps, and Saito .72GK (the gold blends well with the yellow). Weight without fuel is 8 lbs, 10 oz.
In answer to question on how I kept it so light:
1) First off, I've seen quite a few of these (Top Flight Corsairs), and the ones that are finished with iron on covering usually end up in the 9 lb range, whereas the 'glassed and painted ones usually end up between 11 ~12 lbs. This is not to say that a light weight 'glassed one cannot be done, I'm sure there are those out there with the skills to do it, I just haven't seen it.
2) I use Futaba s3004 sservos, they weigh 1.3 oz ea. whereas a lot of other servos weigh 1.6 oz ea.. With 6 of them on board, I saved 1.8 oz. In addition, I use a S133 Micro (.67 oz) for the retract valve opertor, and also have installed a 133 for mixture control.
3) I replaced the wire in tube control rods for elevator and rudder, with Sullivan Precision control lines (White outer, black inner), saving a couple of ounces.
4) I used Dave Brown wheels on this one, almost as good looking as the Robart scale wheels but a couple ounces lighter.
5) As I choose to use the Saito .72, which is a couple ounces lighter than a .91, I replaced the stock motor adjustable motor mount with a lightend Hayes AL40 motor mount, again saving a couple ounces.
It all adds up to keep the weight down to where I like it. From previous experience, I know that I will be able to make slow, scale passes on about 1/4 throttle, then throttle up for scale climbout. Landings are almost trainer like, and go a long way towards easing the burdon on those fragile Robart retract links.

Cool... That scheme is almost exactly how I'm going to cover mine (see Post #3 of this thread). I like the big arrows, so I can tell which way is up and which way is forward.
What did you do to get it so light?

corsair f4U-4
Attached is my 82 inch Brian Taylor corsair. The photo was from Top Gun last April. Has a Webra Bully 35CC on glow, Aune rtracts, Airtronics Infinity 1000 radio. Looks like Evan's and mine are painted the same. The documentation came from an old Profile magazine. Mel Santamyer did a racing Corsair a few years ago.

Awesome corsair
Brian, Your corsair is truly awesome. I have that issue if MA in my reading room and I never pick it up without admiring the cover. It looks a heck of alot more scale than mine does. BTW, if you ever want to sell one of your thunderbolts, let me know.
