Chic
I included a pre-flight / first flight checklist on the last page of the Avenger instruction manual. I am attaching a list here for your reference.

Preflight and first flight checklist
Double Check CG.
Test retracts with wing in place

Before engine start
All batteries charged
Outer wing retaining bolts in place
Check that hinges are secure elevator -rudder -aileron
Check that canopy and crew door are secure
Fuel filled
Air filled
Frequency Pin
Select Avenger model in transmitter
Rates set on transmitter
Range check
Check controls for proper direction
Check flap operation, do outer flap sections extend equally?

After engine start
Smooth idle, good transition, steady high end
Range check with engine running

I hope this helps, and if anyone has any additions I will be glad to add them.

Charlie

Sorry Charlie, my mistake. I have read several times, the checklist in your instructions. For some reason, I did not put the two together, that is your comments about having a checklist on hand and you already providing a checklist contained in your set of instructions. By the way, how are you coming along with the Tracker? Certainly put me on your list to get one of the first ten sets of plans and kit. Chic

Charlie,
Please let me know how much I'll have to get a home equity loan from the wife for the tracker....
I almost have the turret remarked for the repaint, my cohort was working on the cockpit and it's almost done.
Next week we start setting the throws for the control services and hopefully start paint in 3 weeks
I'm not sure well finish before Peter at the rate he's going.

S2-F...I'm in for some plans if it is not so very big. Charlie, what dimensions are you prescribing? I may be very interested. My Dad did some MAD operator duty for a time.

That is a good video Larry. I had not seen that one, thanks for the link.

It looks like Grover may have the next Avenger finished at the rate he is going. It is looking very good.

My father was an engine mechanic on the S2-F while they were in Navy Reserve service in the late fifties. I have been planning the S2-F build for a number of years having drawn the plans in 2008. Unfortunately I can't finish the plans without the landing gears to get the structure right. I sent drawings of the landing gears to Darrell two years ago and spoke to him last week about them. He has a hard time building one or two sets of custom landing gears due to the setup costs. He promised to take another look at the Tracker gears for me. My design criteria for the Tracker is that it has to fit into my minivan so the wing center section is 47" making the wing span 127". I made a trip to the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola last month to get some more photos of their Tracker and ask some questions about the aileron controls. I hope to start construction when I finish my Ziroli D-18 in late summer. I expect it to take two years to build the prototype.

Peter, you are the "MAN". OK, OK, OK, I want a pair. How much do I send you for a pair plus shipping. Wow, that is some kind of engineering. Also, what did you make your gear doors out of? How think are the gear doors? Put me down for a pair. Chic

Lovely work on the sheet metal. Where does one find rivets that small? Thinking of late with the overcenter issue, on many a Piper planes with retractable gear that i work on, sport springs attached the will assure the overcenter or even dead center mechanisms that will pull the break point in a desired direction. Cheap and assures that the gear will work when electrics or hydralics are inop.

Charlie...for you. http://yourepeat.com/watch/?v=va7Gj6Az4gQ

very small ailerons but for slow flight mode, spoilerons on the tops of the wings kick in as well as the auxiluary rudder. Lots of fin and rudder for single engine slow flight. Makes for a lovely trait for a model. The narrow high aspect wings might be an issue.

Addon to checklist; ( From own experience on mistakes done...)

Before Engine start:
Is gear switch in "Gear Down" position? ( How many times has your gear retracted on the field, with the engine running....[:'(])

Preflight:
Did you really secure the clunk to the fuel tubing inside the tank? Or was it to be done "another day" ?

When Engine running;
Measure Max Rpm. Is it as expected? ( Or is the engine running on just one cylinder....or whatever other reason....)

Do a taxi-test for, say, 15 minutes. Anything shaking loose? A bolt? A nut?

Peter
Your side strut is great. They will add a lot to the look of your Avenger.

Thanks for the S2-F links Ray. I have been trying to learn more about the aileron and spoiler controls. I asked at the Naval Museum but didn't get a good understanding. On airliners the ailerons are used for small corrections and the spoilers come up when needed for large corrections. I expect the S2-F works the same way but I haven't been able to find out for sure. One Stoof pilot that I spoke to explained how he would use the spoilers to walk a high approach down. I think I would want an airspeed indicator for that though.

Kwik
I too have done the gear switch thing. My JR 12X radio allows a "Warning" to be programmed which inhibits the TX until the switch position is corrected. I will add "Check the retract switch" to the checklist. Thanks for the idea.

Great workmanship, someone else we now have to strive to match, not yet were still neophytes compared to you guys.
Beautiful work on the strut, did you machine them or get the parts from a source, and if I have to sell my wife for a set...err forget that she donates to my obsession...

Ok, I'm about ready to set fire to my Avenger.... it pales in every way, shape and form compared to the work displayed here as of late!

Keep up the good work, EVERYONE!

I'm still watching (and learning), obviously!

Peter, I just can not get over your side struts. What a work of art. Staircases, models, now metal work. Larry, I'm with you, based on what I see, we "ARE" neophytes for sure. Chic

Noah,
If you're burning yours than I offer up ours as kindling. Up until now I thought we were at least fair model builders, but after seeing peters workmanship in such a short period of time.... I think I'm going back to paint by numbers.

New to "what", are you talking building an Avenger, if so you are certainly welcome to chime in anytime on "whatever" you are needing or interested in? We are just in awe of Peter's work, work that would normally take weeks or months that this modelling giant, only needed days to accomplish. Whew, my knees are still wobbly. Chic

And besides, you are most certainly welcome to join in, "HEY", for our friend Peter, is a fellow Canadian of yours, "HEY". (I spent many years at a North Dakota Air Force Base).

E-Gap, how did you know? Noah, you can stop talking that way, you lead the way for all of us to follow. I still read your posts constantly when I am working on my Avenger. Chic
