Removing and replacing a broken hinge
Every now and then someone will ask how to replace a broken hinge. In most cases someone responds with the usual use a brass tube to cut it out, but I'm not sure anyone has ever posted pics on the how to. This week I had to replace a robart hinge on the elevator of my TF GS Corsair so I took some pics to demostrate how I do the job.
Anyone with with a different approach or other methods or suggestions feel free to jump in and add your comments.
Pic. 1 Here I have cut and cleared a short slot over the broken portion of the hinge on the bottom side of the horizontal stab.
Pic. 2 I have used a very small cutter in the dremell to cut off the knuckle from the section of the hinge in the elevator half.
Pic. 3 Here is picture of the brass tubing with the end dressed up to resemble teeth on a saw blade.
Pic. 4 Place the brass tube in a drill and place it over the portion of the hinge left in the elevator and drill it out. You will be able to tell when the hing has broken free and can be extracted.
Pic. 5 Increase the length of the slot to expose the rest of the hinge, here I have looped some steel fishing leader around it to pull it out of the horizontal
Pic. 6 The busted hinge out in less than 5 minutes

Finish up with a balsa plug over the top of the hinge and dress out and paint as needed.

After landing a cross wind spun her around while she was still moving too fast to turn and she came up on one wheel dragging the wing tip and the tip of the elevator. With the hidden hinge line the hinge knuckle is in the center of the radius of the elevator leaving a length of the barb in the stab portion being suceeptable to a lot of leveraging. Ill try and take a pic of the scrapes on the bottom side of the elevator and you can see it had a lot of force applied to it.
