I am guessing because kerosene is cheaper than nitro....I don't know though. I wouldn't want to try it.

the next best thing that engines may soon be running on is ethanol. OS was the first to make an ethanol rc engine for planes.

The methanol reacts with the glowplug to provide the spark, the nitromethane is for a bit more kick and also to ease tuning. Petrol for instance requires a air:fuel mixture between 16:1 (very lean) and 12:1 (very rich) - a fairly narrow range. Nitromethane on the other hand has a much wider range, as rich as 2:1 and as lean as 6:1 I believe, and it will still burn - so it's extremely tolerant of a wide range of tune, which is good because keeping the mixtures within a tight range over a wide rev/throttle range is difficult.

Planes - on the other hand - work over a smaller rev/throttle range and many can run with 0% nitro. But without that additive to widen the range of mixtures that the engine will run, they are probably more difficult to tune and run well only over a smaller rev/throttle range.
