Nope it was a true reading. It was however on my Giant Scale Stiletto with a DA170 fuel injected on alcohol.

Many say this is possible. Some have told me they have already done it. I cant wait to see what happens at the event. Im waiting for work to slow down and weather to clear up to get some more flying and testing in on my planes.

Thought I would give this plane a try (Phx Model) Strega.
It was a quick build - powered by a YS70 and controlled with the JR28X
I can now race Bronze!!!
I call out Dave Sullivan and Skids to join me!!

Especially with a Gold Racer at the helm and 30+ nitro.

One of our club members is running a YS 63 with 20% and still breaking out.......Nice looking plane though. Retracts that come with it are a bit weak. Pretty looking, but not up to Warbird racing standards. Good luck Marty.

Its not a gold racer, not sure if it is built well enough to handle silver, but for bronze, it will be just fine.
I heard the gear were weak, but they seem to be strong as what is out there from WM (5/32 gear).
The weakest parts are the 2 stabs, but as stated, should be ok for bronze.
Ive been wanting to race Ernie, Gomez and Dean... ever since he became a popular discussion topic here on RCU. Beating him will make me famous.

We just got 3" snow. I was all set to test it today and bam !! The white stuff came again.

Rick C. ran that Phoenix Model Strega II at the last SAM's race, in April. He ran it in Silver. Not sure which engine he had in it, but pretty sure it was at least a YS 110. When I asked him early in the day about how he liked the plane, he said that it was pretty fast, and he was happy with its flying characteristics.

As I recall, he broke out once, and ran a couple 2:00s. I seem to remember one of the gear collapsing on one of his landings. During the last round, his plane went in. I was too busy preparing mentally for what I needed to do against the other pilots in the "A-Main", hoping to win the day to pay much attention, so not sure if it was a mid-air, or something failed structurally.

If anyone recalls if it was a structural failure, or not, please post. I would think that Marty, and others interested in this plane, would appreciate the input.

The stabs are not built for silver. I wouldnt race it other than in bronze. We do club racing here locally where bronze speeds are perfect for our break out, thats really why I got it. I dont plan on racing it in anything other than local stuff. I may have to look at hobbico gear and see if they will bolt in. The rest of the plane looks good enough for bronze. The wing is plenty strong, though I wish the wing tube was about 6" longer. Like Dave said, for the price, its worth a try. Dave you need one of these for sure. What else are you gonna do with those extra engines?

You will without a doubt become famous if you beat Ernie and Dean. Not sure which Gomez your referring to Marty. If it be Tony, I don't think he races in the Bronze class. If I'm not mistaken I think
Ernie and Dean will be at the next race in Kingman. If your in the area Marty I'd sure like to see that race. I would change out the landing gear though. Pretty plane . I thought about buying one
myself until I got an up close look see. The stab is too weak for silver (easy fix) and the engine mount would have to be re-worked for anything larger than the YS70. I would also like to know why Rick C.'s
plane crashed. Since our club member changed out the landing gear he hasn't had any problems. The plane flies like it's on rails similar to the World Models Mustang. Good Bronze racer.

Dan,
Gomez was Deans first alias.

I maidened the strega today and it was extremely tail heavy. The recommended CG is inaccurate or I have a incidence issue on the motor mount. I have moved my btty from the tail to the front with hopes that this will correct the flight issues. There was close to 18 MPH winds with gusting even more so it was a shakey ride for its first flight
The L/G held up fine but it was a soft touch on landing. It took a lot of runway to get off the ground, but landed nicely.
This will be a fun sport plane if nothing else. The YS70 is a perfect match for it.... no vibration and tons of HP.
The JR 28X guided it like smooth butter. I did come home and tighten my stick tension even more..... its so responsive with the high stick resolution on this TX.

Dan do you know what gear they switched out to? I have some WM gear and some Hobbico.

Thanks Marty. I think the latest is Roy Macavoy ha.

Don't know off the top of my head on which gear he changed to Marty but the TImpa warbird gang meet every Wednesday and I'll find out for you. if I had my choice and wasn't worried about funtional struts
I'd use the WM gear. They seem to take whatever you throw at them and never break. I think our member found a pair that were functional but not sure what brand. I'll let you know.

Thx Dan
I have a set of WM and Hobbico (which is what I use in my Gold Planes). The beauty of this strega is that the struts are short so any gear will be beefy with that short stance. I guess the weak point on these stock gear must be the plastic housing inside.?
Everything else looks like good stuff.

I think you've got the problem solved Marty. If I recall, there was a problem with the wall thickness of the aluminum portion of the strut and it pulled out. If Mike is out at Timpa today I'll make sure. I really like
the looks of that plane and the price is right. Still might pick one up??? I'm curious how it's going to hold up Marty so when you start racing it I'd appreciate any feedback on your part. I'm sure lots of others
are interested as well.
Headed out to Timpa to test my first ever 2.4Ghz radio. Sure hope I don't yank the rubber ducky off it trying to extend the antenna. Only reason I broke down was because your not allowing 72Mhz or 50Mhz at the championship race. Trying hard to get it together for the race. Take care. I'll let you know what I find out.

Jeff,
Not sure if thats the weak point, sounds like Dan is saying the wall on the round strut failed.
I will fly this a couple more times next week and see if its still holding up, if so Ill race it as is, if not Ill put the Hobbico stuff in there.

Dan, I have not said no 72 or 50 Mhz at my race. I did mention I was looking into it as some fields require 2.4 these days. I have talked to the Fresno guys and they are still 72 compliant. I have not posted this as a requirement for this race so not sure where you got that info? But you are safest making the switch anyway, way better than 72, even PCM set ups.

I was so looking forward to coming to this race, but it is right around the time my first child will be born so that will take priority (well that and sleep).

Talked to Mike today and he said he thought he got a defective set. He has since bought a second plane and no problems. Who knows?

I read it somewhere Marty. Maybe not. Anyway, the change has been made and I almost crashed my Corsair today. I've never used dual rates before and didn't notice it was on high rate. Close call but

saved it. Actually I think the YS110 power saved it.

Dan
Good save, yes the YS offers great power when needed unexpectedly.

I actually use 3 rates when I race
High rate for take off
Low rate for racing normal
Mid rate for racing hard against someone who wont get of my tail and sometimes landing

as a caller I have gotten in the habit of asking my pilot after every take off and before the first turn, "rates"
I do the same for landing, "rates, retracts and throttle trim"
Just cause it gets a bit crazy up there sometimes.

I can see the weak spot if there is one would probably be the plastic block
Racing is hard on all parts

Thanks for the tip Marty. If I ever get the nerve to try that I'll keep this in mind. I'm having fun working with the new Radio though. Spent the better of 4 hours playing with it this morning. Using the Corsair
as a learning platform but plan to put it in the WM Mustang after I'm comfortable with it. Put a YS115 WS in it and it's a whole lot faster than I'm use to in silver. Still shaking from that maiden flight. Re-enforced the stab and removed the belly scoop on it. Also stripped the wing and glassed and re-cover it with Top Flight monokote. Should be competitive but not sure If I will? Hope to see you at one of the RCPRO races.
