I cut the red wire from the ESC BEC and now use a 4S 4.8V NiMH battery.

The gear extend and retract a little bit slower, but they stopped burning out.

No. The binding occurred during nose gear retraction and it burned out the retract which I had to replace. The brass tubing is standard K&S.
The steering servo still works, but I agree it does not...
