Default rails

when installing engine rails in to my 56 inch appache should i install some ply wood to reinforce the transom as i will be putting a rcm sterndive on the back of my boat ??

do i need to make the rails a special shape or will 1/4'' ply cut 2.5'' high be ok ?

Default RE: rails

stringers and transom should look something like this

wood in this hull is over kill

1/4" will work fine.

make the transom strong for the RCM drive.

As stated, 1/4" is fine. As for the shape of the stringers, that is dictated by the engine, you will need to shape the stringers as you install the engine. Just make sure all your shaping is long, soft currves so there is no place for a crack to start in the wood. 90 degree cuts in the wood is an invitation for fractures.

Adding ply to the transom really isn't necessary, but prudent. You could simply make a backing plate for the drive out of 1/8" Stainless Steel (I use dicarded restraunt pans and lids and cut them to shape) or aluminum.

Nice Build. Very solid and straight-foward. If I was to build my own rc at this point, you would have to forgive the copyright protection clause. David Barclay
