AEROSPLAT IS THE KING!!!!!
I finally got out to the field with both my 1.60FX powered planes. I printed out the advice of AEROSPLAT on how to set the needles on this engine and they both run amazingly well now!!! Thanks AEROSPLAT!!!!
I have one on the Columbo Anderson Extra 24% (pictured in my Avitar), and the other on a Ohio R/C Cap 232 kit I built. Plenty of reliable power and both of my TME smoke systems work great with these planes.
I have regular Zinger 18X6's on them and got 8600 rpm at the top and they idle great at 1700 rpm. They have the Perry V-20 oscillating pump inline just before the needle valve. Both are running at between 3/4 and 1 turn out on the high end. One has the Slimline Pitts muffler and the other the Bisson Pitts.
If anyone else has trouble, go back and read post 116. It solved mine!
***IT WAS A VERY GOOD DAY***
Thanks again!

Good to hear, Dave! My luck hasn't been so good yet. VERY windy today, so we scrapped any flights. Oh well. Next chance is only 7 days away.... unless I call in sick?

I wish. It'd be too late (dark) by the time I leave the office and get up to the field.... gotta love San Diego traffic!
MC130 has got me excited about tuning this thing. There is nothing like trying to learn to fly a plane and not trust the engine.

Good luck then...DOH!
Again, I had a great "1.60FX" flying day, then this happened! I have to wait for another pilot figure to fly this plane again. I don't want to take the canopy off 2 times. This was an MG Model Graphics pilot I painted myself. Denny is sending me a replacement one, painted, no charge. That's the way to stand by your products!
I can't wait to fly again!

Oh sure! Aerosplat never told us THAT little detail about tuning the 1.60! Great! Now I have to worry about my pilots head popping off from all the power............ too bad for them! HA!

Hi! I own 2 planes with TME Deluxe Smoke Systems/1.60FX's and both work great! I have 2 different mufflers and 2 different ways of getting the smoke.
First I have the Bisson pitts muffler with a home-made smoke coil inside the muffler made from copper tubing and JB welded in place. On the second plane, I have a Slimline Pitts muffler. All I did here was drill and tap an 8-32 hole on the manifold part of the muffler (just down from where the engine and the muffler mate), and install a pressure tap. Both work about the same. The latter was a much easier and clean setup. I tried to use the needle valve "clamp" they give you, but I find that by using medium neoprene tubing from the check valve to the muffler, it is just about the right flow.
IMPORTANT! I learned the hard way... no smoke below about 1/3 throttle! I choked my muffler while coming down from a loop and the engine quit! The landing was uneventful but could have made for a bad day. I'm trying to figure out how to program my smoke to automatically shut off below 1/2 throttle. Just in case I'm having too much fun and forget!
I use the MDW Aviation smoke oil that Tower sells. Good smoke trails. It drives the guys at the field nuts with envy!
Hope that helps!

I am running a 160 fx in a 68 inch 4.7 kilo scale extra 300. OS A5plug 10% nitro 20% syn oil 18X10 topflight powerpoint wood prop for truly awesome performance.(endless, fast vertical lines similar to down line speed) The engine runs very smooth, starts great and is very good on fuel consumption.
I have not tried the low pitch props I notice most of you are useing, Do you have much prop noise with them.

I just picked up a OS 160fx. I will be using the standard muffler, it's going on a Stick type Spad plane, so it will be hanging out in the open. Does this mean I won't be needing a pump? I've been told you don't need the pump when using the standard muffler. Also, the only prop the LHS had that seemed appropriate for this engine was a standard Zinger 18X6. I see that others use this prop, but is it okay for breaking the motor in, or should I use something that puts a little more load on the engine? This is my first big glow engine, any help or suggestions are appreciated. I'm already aware that ringed engines need prolonged rich breakings, so I'm okay on that end. Thanks.

I broke mine in on a APC 17X8.
Best prop for verticle after break-in APC 18X6 or Mezjlik 20X6.
I am running a Bolly 16.6X10 three blade for noise reduction.

To pump, or not to pump
The need for a pump will depend on your tank location and the type of flying you do. If you mount the tank right behind the firewall, and on centerline with the carburetor spray-bar, you should be good without a pump. If you move the tank (clunk) back more than 10 inches away from the carburetor, you will probably need a pump. Also, if you do aggressive aerobatics with tight loops, acceleration on up lines and such, you probably will need a pump also.

My personal experience with this engine is that it is very sensitive to lean runs -- it does not like them and will send you to the maintenance shack before you realize it, especially if your using Cool Power without adding some castor to the mix.
