RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I already have the 31T pinion on my rally for higher top speeds. The springs on the mini slash shocks are longer and would cause more suspension roll I would think. They are the same as the mini revo and are more for offroad.

If you guys go to buy lipo batteries, go to hobbyking and look at the new Tenergy nano series. I have tested many of them on a wattmeter. They are good. As good as batts 3 times the price I have tested.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I tested the Gens Ace packs as well and they are not as good. The Tenergy nano series is the best pack for the money. I used a Cellpro PowerLab 8 v2 to do the discharge testing. I have a new r/c product coming to the 1/5 scale market soon that I had to find quality packs for to put in the product kit, and I went through a lot of lithium packs in the testing to find the Tenergy nano as best bang for the buck. I will say that at low discharge rates, the Gens Ace are actually just as good. But that is the killer. At high discharge rates, packs' capacities change from rated 5000mAH, down to 4500, 4000mAH etc. This makes the cheaper packs more allowable in things like airplanes. In r/c off-road, discharge rates can be quite high, due to constant motor acceleration and motors with lower internal resistance than airplane motors, also just more drastic operating conditions on the motor. So if you have two packs that are both 5000mAH, one rated for 25C, the other rated for 50C, when both are used in r/c off-road, the 25C pack may end up providing 3500mAH, while the 50C pack may end up providing 4800mAH of capacity. This is where the higher C rating pays off, even though they are both rated as 5000mAH packs that look and weigh the same.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Matt M - You may be right. But, my racing experience for the Gens Ace packs has been very good over the summer racing six minute heats. These are 1800 packs for the 1/16 scale, and they have performed well at local racing and the price is good. I have had Tenergy packs in the past and they have been good and bad. The Hoobypartz batteries have been good. I have had very good luck with the Tenergy pack in my 4wd Slash and it seems to be very good. I mentioned the Hobbypartz pack because of my experience, the price and decent shipping price and time. I'm sure there are a lot of good packs out there. Hobbypartz also has some NIMH that are good and cheaper. The problem with Hobbypartz is that their prices are good and things good out of stock. I think if we keep sharing information to make our hobby cheaper and more reliable that's what it's all about. I appreciate your information on the Tenergy batteries. Thanks.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I got the 1/10 system installed in my Rally. Castle Mamba Max Pro ESC and 7700kv motor. I took the tenbol motor mount from my Merv and put it on my Rally. Got a Traxxas 540 mount for the Merv's big block, so I can have the gears covered as the Rally didn't need that protection being a on-road car. On the Rally I modified the chassis to sit the Castle MMP ESC down inside the battery box as I only run one lipo at a time. I also installed the Traxxas steel axles I got really cheap a while back and while I did that I lubed the diffs and did some routine maintanence on the whole car while I had it apart.
Today I plan to take it and strap my gps to it again and see what the top speed is. Just after plugging in a battery and testing the car I could tell the power increase in my hand. We will see the final results today.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Gforce,
Well done man! Looks awesome! I am now a fan of placing the esc inside the battery compartment. It protects it for one, you could even use the side that housed the reciver and possibly keep water of the esc but temps could get to be an issue unless a fan was installed through the cover to push air inside the compartment. Lastly, we really only need one battery anyways. The only other reason for 2 batteries is to run 4s - which may be overkill anyways. With your set up and the right gearing, you'll probably go as fast as you'll ever need off of 3s
I just bought a mini quake practically brand new for 54 shipped. Says that the TRX is broken, but I dont need it anyways. - got my own electronics. I've had a vendetta before and I made it into a rocket putting the electronics and motor from my merv in it. Thought I'd try out a mini quake. Anyone have experience with these?
Joe

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Well with the current setup the gps registered 40mph. Thats with a 2S lipo 31t pinion and 45t spur. The car was very controllable just about at any speed. Still had to ease into the throttle when accelerating just like the stock setup. I think I might play around with the programming of the esc, make some alternative throttle curves. I just left it at default, but 40 isn't bad when the rally has smaller wheels. I will have to put my street tires on my big block merv and gear it up and find out its top speed as well. I took pics of the gps readings, will post them later.
Great find on the Quake Joe. I now have the rally's vxl system to do something with.

Gforce,
I may be interested in your VXL system. Pm me for more details
40mph? Isn't that basically the stock speeds with the rally? Or was that 35mph on 2S? At any rate, the car is probably alot mote efficient now and perform better with less heat issues.
Great set up bro! Always digging the AMP stuff. I'm doing a Monster Energy setup my self.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Thanks!
My gps read 32mph with the stock setup on 2S lipo and now 40mph with the 1/10 system with the same battery and gearing. I might try tweeking the programming and esc settings to maybe eek out a couple more mph but I also want to have good control for drifting and racing around. Here are some pics of the gps which each system.
Yep, AMP the only energy drink I drink. So it's become a self-made sponsor.

Not to hijack the thread here, but I have done a tripple on the Monster Energy setup. Between Monster & Rockstar I think they have some cool looks.

That's funny G-force, because Monster is the only energy drink I drink. I fact, monster does alot for us military folk, we always have monsters are always with us when we deploy. My favorite is the low calorie monster which is actually blue in color. But, I still favor the old black and green loom of standard monsters.
Did I sell you a merv body that was decorated up with monster??? That may have been skora from the merv boards.
Hey Oz, I like the small mini Cooper or whatever that 1/18 scale is. By the way, what is it? If you don't mind me asking?

Joecool, Thanks & that's a Losi 1/24 Rally. I wanted the body that matches the KB Rally, but at the time it was out of stock and I really wanted a new body, so I got a new clear stock one. The crawler is a Venom.

Here is a question for you guys that run the Rally....
Is it worth it to convert my Mini Revo to a Mini Rally? Otherwise I am going to sell my Mini Revo because I just bought the Savage XS and now the Mini Revo is just going to sit and collect dust.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
T9, I guess that would depend on how & what you like to drive. I had a mini revo & it was great, but I ended up selling & eventually got the KB rally... same basic setup, but def. drives different! I like my rally better, but it is solely opinion. Not sure if that helps or not. If your more of an off-road... I'd say stick with the revo, but more on-road?... rally. even though, either one can do on/off road.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I have both the Mini Revo and Rally. I have had my Merv for a few years now but after getting the Rally this year I have been driving it alot more than the Merv. Mainly because of where I live and can run it more. Yes the Merv can run on-road but it doesn't handle, drift and not flip over like the Rally. But like Ozzy said it's up to the user. It all depends on what you like. The Rally isn't much of an off-roader, if I run off the payment it can handle driving back on to the pavement sometimes. But it also easily gets stuck in the shortest of grass.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Ok so last sunday I bought my Kyle Busch. I must say I love it. But yesterday I decided I wanted more speed, so I hit up my LHS and bought the 1/10th castle sct 3800kv set up. I was told it would be a lot faster then the stock brushless system. Well Im kind of disappointed it really doesnt seem any faster, I have a brushess 1/16 Slash that looks just as fast if not faster then the Kyle Busch with the SCT, I used the same pinion off of the Slashes stock VXL system.
What do you guys think I should try?

Well the weight of the bigger motor is a big part of your problem. A bigger motoring smaller rc is not gonna do what you would expect. That's Why these things come with smaller motors. But you can always mess with gearing and see what that does for you

I think the stock pinion is larger in the 1/16 scale Slash. I think it's 30T or larger. You may want to simply put in a larger pinion.

Yeah I think the stock pinion in the 1/16 Slash is a 31-32t. And the spur im running isa 45T. Should I try a bigger pinion and leave the 45T spur?
Im starting the LHSmislead me in to buying something that wasnt what I was looking for.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I've been considering buying a Mini, and have a few questions.
How does it hold up against rust?
What are the ride height differences between the mini slash and mini rally?
Is there any way to fit M-Chassis or Cup racer bodies on it?
Are there any other good bodies besides the Team Blugroove Porsche?
It the brushless worth it? I would try to buy one used anyway but nonetheless?
Thats all, thanks!
