after my share of problems i have been running my xs a lot lately. i have replaced the esc with a vxl and the motor with a 2 pole tacon 4000kv. also upgraded the steering servo. it runs great and i love the little truck. i run in my yard mostly which is all grass. im having trouble keeping the motor temp down. i have went from the 28t pinion all the way to a 23t. i run it on a 3s 5000mah 30c/60c lipo but im not a full throttle driver and don't drive it real hard. any one else having this problem? is my gearing still off for just bashing and running in the yard? is there something else i can do to keep the temp down? thanks, matt

first time out i hit 180 real quick. before i even knew it, that was with the 28t. i dropped a couple teeth and it took longer to get hot and i stopped when it hit 170. i dropped down to 23t and run it today and got the longest run time before i hit 160 then stopped. i normally run my motors around 150.

My guess is that the motor isn't strong enough. The XS is pretty heavy considering its a mini.Motor temps haven't been much of an issue among the posters in here and there shouldn't be a heat problem if the motor and ESC are well matched. The best solution to deal with heat is to do what you are doing, gear shorter until you don't have a problem. If you have to gear down too much then that says something about the setup. I personally think fans on 1/10 motors are bandaid solutions unless natural air flow is severely restricted.

I run a castle SCT 3800 motor with stock gearing and temperatures have never been a problem on 3s/65-130C/4300mAh battery. I quit following temperatures a while ago since it was a waste of time because the temps were beyond safe. I am happy with the gearing and don't plan to change it and there is more room left for taller gearing.

In my experience those tacon motors tend to run warm, probably cheaper magnets. Combine that with running on grass and the temps are going to go up.

I picked up a blur ESC for $115 shipped off of ebay last night. I can get a mamba max pro for the same price. I would prefer to run a mamba max pro in my blitz for the track and may have to pull the one from my XS in the meantime.

I sold my unused vapor pro and vektor 4000 from the XS for $115.

The XS has inspired me to eventually get an HP. I thought about converting my savage but it needs too much including differentials. I think its better to buy a flux 2350, take the ESC out for 1/10 since I need one and put the blur in there and eventually change the motor ( I do have the HP motor in my truggy). I can keep my nitro and move my mods over to the flux eventually (then sell my last nitro?!).

Thats what I did, got the Flux 2350, bought the HP motor for $140, took the 2350 motor out and put it in my 1/8 onroader, and I use HK 120A 1/8 Brushless ESC's over MMM's anyway, so $50 for the speedie and the Q Base thing is on 1/10 Corr duty in a Nexx 10SC

Ideally 150F or under... At 200F you will hurt the motor, maybe even less with a cheaper motor...

One of the issues that could be causing your high temps is that you are running it in the grass.

i figured it was just that it was over geared from the factory. never had a truck that was over geared this much. my stampede xl-5 with hobbywing 4000kv brushless system i had to drop the pinion from 19t to 18t and my evader i droped 2 teeth i believe. thanks for the help everyone, ill keep changing it til i get it where i want it.

Thanks nitro-rob for showing us how to pull the transmission almost painlessly.

Now to fire up the soldering iron to heat the bajeezus out of the rear outdrive so the MFer will come off the MFing shaft[:@]

The shims are already there. Just take one from the cup side and put it on the ring gear side.

If you go back and read the thread you will see what lipos will fit also if you go to the HPI website and look at the manual it will give the dimensions of the battery box.

from my experience with this truck i have to recommend you not use a 20c lipo in it. these trucks pull alot of current and i dont think 20c will hold up. also you can expect the esc to go up in smoke if you connect a 3s battery. i ended up replacing the esc, motor and steering servo. great truck not so great electronics.

I don't think its a rule that 3s blows the ESCs, there have been a bunch of failures but I am not certain if it directly correlates with 3s running.  Many are running 3s just fine.
