Default Littlest Stick Help

Howdy All! I am in the final stages of building a Littlest stick. I have removed most of the wing incidence an now only have 2 degrees of it. I also have added the additional wing bay. I am planing on building it three or two channel. Elevator/Aileron or Elevator/Aileron/Rudder. I haven't decided on which one yet. The LS will be powered by a Cox TD .020 with a Perfect 1/4 OZ brass tank in the nose.

Questions are:

What size prop is optimal for a TD .020?
How much throw for the control surfaces?
Landing Gear or No gear (I fly on a grassy field)
First Flight Suggestions?

As always you help is greatly appreciated!

Default LS

Welcome to the forum!

Good idea to use the .020. and more wing area.Mine had the .010 and I built it too heavy for it to fly very well. The weight needs to be to 5 ozs. Mine was 8oz and that was too heavy.
You only need two channels. I think I would go with ailerons and elevator. You need to have less dihedral with ailerons.I had rudder and elevator and it was very sensitive to the amount of throw. I think I had 3/8 inch total throw on rudder and about the same on elevator. If you use landing gear mount the wire on the front of the plane only,as a tail dragger.

I built a 150% size version (30 inch span)with a .049 Black Widow and this combination is fantastic! I fly it with 2ch, rudder and elevator. Lots of fun.

Default Thanks LS!

LS,

Thanks for the great information. I am sure you meant .020 not .20! Two channels vs. three will save me at least .20 OZ.
I have already set the dihedral to the recomended 1" under each tip, and the ailerons are in soooooo. I wonder what my LS will weigh in at?

Thanks again.

Yep, my mistake should be .020 and .010, I changed it.

Yep, the BW hauls it good!
Just put the plans on the copy machine and enlarge 150%.
I have a 175% (35 inch span)I'm working on for the .074
I have yet to fly the LS150 with the new 1.33 oz tank, I have been busy and it has rained a lot. I should get 10min. plus flights. I'm tempted to put a AP .061 on it, but it only has two channels, and that would not be true to the cox tradition of this plane.

I thnk it's a 5x3 or 5x2.5. Whatever the Cox grey 5 inchers are anyway. I don't think anyone has anything better than these. If you can't find them then I'd say an APC 6x2 cut down to 5 would be fine. Or you can try an APC 6x3 and cut that done to 5 but taper the blade width a little to help the rpm's stay up there. It'll be a real screamer with that engine.

Not very much. Small models are flitty at best. I'd say about +- 3 3/32 for the ailerons and no more than +- 1/8 for the elevator. Especially at your speeds. Go for more later if that's not enough.... or even less if you're nervous.

No landing gear. It's added weight for nothing on these small models. Not just the wire but the structural details required to keep it from ripping out. It all adds up quick on the small ones.

Don't crash.... If you need to know anything about the first flight then this isn't your kind of model. Oh, OK then. Since it's on draw then don't THROW it. That can starve the engine. You want a gently accelerated push from way back there to out here and then release with about a 20 degree up angle. More like a guided javelin toss A helper you trust to launch will let you keep your thumbs ready. Don't bother running with this one. It'll just confuse ya.

sounded like all good advice Bruce,, hey Lynn, I'm gonna try that 150% thing on the copier at work tonight..it was a pretty simple build , so it should be just as easy , and I need something to put behind my BW,and maybe later put the teedee on....thanks, Rog

Default Littlest Stick Help

H-A-H Hi I built a little stick which I kit- bashed and turned into a bi-plane and used the TD .020 that flew it great. I used the std 4.5 x 2 .020 prop and that flew it fast and wild- a real handfull, but also a real blast. I also had to make the rudder larger to get more control but the throws are not large ( rudder and elevator only control ). I also used a extended tank of about 1/4 to 1/3 oz which gave me about 4 to 5 min. of flight time. I had landing gear at first but took it off- it flew better w/o it. But just go for it and have fun. Have someone else throw it for you the first time and hang on Dale

Build everything with 3/32" sheet balsa, and use 1/4 x1/4 for the spars. Just use 1" dihedral at the wingtips. This is just like the Simple Extra uses except the Extra has a foam wing with no spars. It turns out to be the same size as the Extra. You will like it! - Lynn

If you pulled the dihedral out, then you'll need ailerons fersure. Depending on what you've got hanging around for radio gear, if it's cheaper/simpler to just stick ailerons on it and forget about the rudder. It'll fly well

Default Littlest Stick Help

I built mine a few years ago and I didn't use the lightest equipment available so it was a little ovwerweight. I removed most of the dihedral and wing incidence.
Specifications:
PeeWee .020
3/4" elevator and ailerons with covering hinges
Standard 9ch JR receiver
2 - Cirrus 26bb servos
110 mAh battery pack
Cox 4.5X2 prop that came with the engine.

It came out to 7.5 oz, but it still flew fine with the PeeWee .020 as you can tell by the poorly trimmed climb out on it's maiden flight.

Default Great Picture

Bibe Flier,

Thats a great shot! My LS is all done exept for covering and installing the radio gear.

Receiver - Hi Tec 555
Battery - 110 ma
Servos - Sub Micro .20 Oz. each (Ailerons - Elevator)
Engine - TD .020
Tank - Perfect #15 1/4 Oz.

I need to get it to my local post office and get an official weigh in.

Thanks for all the advice.

Hec
