Default Where do you guys get your fuel these days?

I've always mixed my own but have lost my source for nitro & my methanol is old. I have used Byron's 1/2a fuel in the past with an extra dose of castor but I can't find a source.

I found this: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDBNH&P=7 and this: http://www.horizonhobby.com/race-300...ace-byr3130703 The 30% car fuel could have castor added (which I have plenty of) Any body got any input on the issue?

I stocked up on fuel ingredients over 10 years ago and am still sucking off the original containers of methanol and nitro.
Look up racing fuel dealers and fuel dealers in your area, especially in the agricultural areas, or in the vicinity of race tracks where sprint cars and nitro burning dragsters run.
SIG Mfg. sells gallon jugs of castor`oil and Klotz brand synthetic oil [formulated for methanol] is easy to find.
Nitro I bought direct from a local VP racing fuel dealer who is gone now, so I'd need to spend a little time asking folks who cater to the local racing community where to buy it now. It was about $30 / gallon last time I bought it 12 years ago.

Thanks C/P, good to hear from you. Yup, I still have a 1/2 gal of Sig Castor & 3/4 gal of Klotz but my methanol is over 20 yrs old & it's been stored out in the shed. I got maybe 4-5oz of nitro left I kept around for cleaning CA smears.

Dunno how far this latest little surge in Cox interest will go and don't want to go whole hog & buy 5 gal of nitro & methanol. I'm thinking a quart of fuel will do me fine for now & will probably just doctor up some store bought fuel. I'm leaning towards the 30% nitro/8% oil Byrons car fuel with about 6 oz. of castor added. What'cha think?

Fuel choices are very limited in Canada, these are my latest go-to choices:

Car fuel and castor. O'Donnell Speed Blend 25% with 8% syn/cas (or Race Blend 8% all syn) plus enough castor to bring total oil up to about 22%. Both at our LHS. .010's love it and they can be hard to please.

SIG Champion, various nitro% + 20% total oil 50/50 syn/cas. Our LHS has this in quarts. Add 2-3% castor if wanted.

I always keep a quart of castor around.

S&W. They make the rounds to many shows but don't know how far west they go as they are in Pennsylvania

Dickeybird, just out of curiosity why don't you mix up a batch of your 20 year old alky & oil and see what it does...?

I'm with MJD, I buy 30% car fuel and add castor. Comes out to 26% nitro and 22% oil most of it castor.

I also have a good stock of methanol and nitro so I can mix my own or modify any fuel I find to suit my needs.

I burn about 2 gallons of 1/2a fuel per year. Who says RC airplanes are expensive?

I bought a gallon of 100% nitro from Amazon. The brand was Turco, I believe.

I buy Castor online at a place called bulk apothecary (not sure of the spelling). I contacted them and was assured the castor was de-gummed, the good stuff.

Methanol is easy to buy locally from industrial fuel suppliers or automtive speed shops.

I buy custom fuel out of Houston, he is happy to blend up any mix. I also buy from my local hobby shop fom time to time and blend what's on hand at home. I like synthetic in the mix during the winter. Summer time in TX demands all castor.

I still buy mine at my local HobbyTown, I'm using either 10%or 15% and the price is still pretty reasonable.

Don't have enough nitro on hand unfortunately.

GREAT tip 049flyer! $53.75/gal Torco 100% nitro, $28.45/gal methanol, free shipping!. I know where to go if I get serious about flying again. Amazon is amazing!

I think I'll just get the 30% car stuff for now.

Dickeybird-

Don't buy the methanol from Amazon, buy it locally. Find a local hot rod shop or industrial fuel suppliers or someone that deals in kerosene, propane etc, Methanol should be well under $10 per gallon.

I get my methanol from a local hardware store. It is normally about $11 a gallon here, but sometimes it is cheaper. I don't mix it often, so I am more concerned about it being fresh. My nitro is maybe 30 years old, and I don't know a good source any more. My nitro container got brittle, and I had to get a fresher one, but it is still good. I just use 10% nitro now, so it lasts longer. All the rules dictate 10% now for speed and racing events, so that is what I use. I know the little guys like the higher nitro, but then I have to use after run oil so the steel piston/cyl. don't rust. Maybe I am just lazy.

MY LHS is mostly nitro car support

I get 1/2a 25%N, all castor from Sig in quarts to escape haz mat
HobbieCo now sells a 1/2a fuel with the proper amount of oil...previously it was very lacking in lube
I get 5% and 10% nitro and a custom oil blend for my Nelson N36c combat engines from Riche's Brew
I buy quarts of UCON LB 625 from Riche's as this is one of the better synth oils and recommended by several engine MFGs
I have bought (on sale cheap) heli and car fuels and uses a calculator to change the mixture for other fun fly OS, ASP, Magnum, Fox, SuperTigre , Veco engines
I use the E-bay Torco for Nitro and Meth gallons and SigMFG for the Castor/Benol/Klotz oils
I also buy AERO 1 from Randy Smith at Precision Aero as another very very good synth OIL

I buy methanol from a local oil company for $2.75/gal, nitro from Torco through Amazon for around $50/gal shipped free, and oil from S&W fuels ($25/gal plus shipping)(SPLube.com). I haven't tried it, but soap makers use castor oil in their soap and apparently American Specialty Oil company sells castor for $18/gal for soapers. I'm gonna try this vendor when I run low on castor oil. They told me by email its first pressing virgin castor oil.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/222068201874...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

He had this at my door this morning, bought it on the 12th came in on the 16th fast turn around and freshly blended.
He will custom make what ever you wish. It cost more but very fresh rather than sitting on a hobby
shelf for months on end..
2 quarts last me about 3-4 months with cox engines I have 2 half gallon aluminum containers one for 4cyl fuel
and the other for 2 cyl with a 1 quart aluminum bottle for more frequent openings, they seal well and are thick walled.
Wish they came in 1 gallon bottles

Tower sells Cox Super Power 1/2A fuel 25% & 35% nitro in quarts. Both have 20% oil, 50/50 castor/synthetic. I recently purchased a quart of 25%, but have not used any of it yet.

It might be best to add a bit of castor...

Try Hobbytown USA. My local store carries COX fuels.
