Ace Aerocommander shrike help
hello all I just purchased an ace shrike aerocommander kit on ebay and am thinking of doing it as a full function 4 channel aircraft. I have never had a plane smaller than a .40 before but this one is just so atttractive, plus I have always had interest in smaller planes. I see quite a few small engines on the market and was wondering if someone could help me with what would be the most #1 reliable and #2 power I could get for this plane. Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly apreciated.
Best Regards to all,
Michael

RE: Ace Aerocommander shrike help
I forget what the specs on this plane are Michael but I think it was designed for Cox Tee Dee .049's?? If so, a pair of well broken in Norvel Big Mig .061's would work great. Can you post the area, weight & such?

Actually, I had the construction article, not the kit review... just grabbed it off the pile. Issue is May 1976, by Ken Holden.
Here are the prototype specs:
wingspan- 49.5 inches
wing cord: root- 6.75"
tip 4.625"
wing area 275 sq inches
1" dihedral each tip
40 ounce weight ready to fly, with a wing loading of 21 ounces a square foot!
(and I was worried about my Seneca with a 15 ounce loading... )
They used two Tee Dee 049s with 1 ounce tanks in the nacelles

Thanks for the info guys. Does the AP engine that's available from tower compare to the Norvel? And is the .061 the best choice or what do you guys think of the .074 or .09's?
AJC I am interested in getting a copy of the article could you scan and email it to me, or make some copies and mail it to me I would be happy to send over a few dollars paypal to cover the expences.

AJC,
I would like to ask if you could possibly send me a copy of the Shrike article too. I've been trying to find a kit w/ no luck and if the article has plans I could just enlarge. Or if anyone has a set of the plans or full size drawings of the fuse/vertical stab/hoz. stab. Should have been a simple plane to find but I have had no luck at all. I would certainly send some bucks for postage/copying.. just let me know. thanks very much

RE: Ace Aerocommander shrike help
The plane was published in RCM and the plans are available from them. I sold a kit about 2 years ago. I'd built the plane when it was origionally offered by Ace and had some good flights on it. In the 70's though with the available equipment that I had there was no throttle and in spite of the adds and the reviewer you really had to watch a flame out of either motor. I had a shut off connected to full down on the elevator. The plane did eventually go the way of all things large and small.
