Default Sullivan Starter

I had a fellow ask me about which battery / batteries to use with the Sullivan Hornet.

I was not much help as I have a borrowed ancient Glo Bee starter.

Anyone using the Sullivan and what power source is working for you?

I did a quick search and found the Hornet starter on the Sullivan website....I didn't even know they made a 1/2A starter! Looks very cool indeed. They show it as being a 12V starter but mention the availability of a "PowerPac" with 12(!!) Sub-C nicads. That seems like a LOT of voltage for a small 12V starter. I would make up a 10 cell pack of Sub-C NiMH which are now what, around 3000-3500 mah? That should do real well on small engines.

Might have to get me one of those cute lil' fellers if my old antique Astro-Flite 1/2A starter ever wears out.

Someone mentioned there was a 540 motor inside. I'm using a 6 cell 1500 mah r/c car battery on my starter which has the same motor.
With a good charge it will handle a .074 just fine.

I believe BipeFlyer mentioned having one in another thread. NORVEL also has a 1/2A starter listed on their website.

My "Hornet" starter has a 550 motor, and I run it from the same 12v battery I use for the bigger "Hi-Tork" starter.

Guys I have been using mine for about a year now w/ a 7 cell car battery pack that I had sitting around from an old car project. I just cut the cord real short and added a car type connecter like on the battery and tie strapped the battery to the bottom of the starter ( its flat and has holes on the starter for the straps to go through) and charge it w/ the old car charger I have. It works great for all my 1/2 A's and has more than enough power and speed. It is very easy to do- let me know if I need to post pictures. Dale
