Default Sure Start engine power?

Hey Guys, I decided to try one of the product engines on my contest plane and was wondering how much plane will one of these engines will handle. Now that I've installed all the gear, the thing is a bit heavier than I originally thought it would be. Now I'm thinking of maybe going back to using one of my TD's. I'll go to the post office in the morning and get a weight on it to be sure what I'm dealing with. Thanks

Thanks CP, How does that relate to the max weight of the plane? I'm sure wing area and such plays a part in it too?

Prop, with enough wing area an .049 will tote 2 pounds around in the air,,what size plane and wing is it,a Fairchild is about 1.5 lbs and its pretty aerobatic ,,well not in my hands but Deadstick can make his dance around pretty well,I still havent flown mine yet...does that help?

A stock reed valve will barely haul a 6 foot glider skyward, but given enough time to get up there, it can haul the plane through a fun little bit of flying. With a smaller sport plane where better acceleration and climb rate is expected, I don't think I would want the same power pulling much more than 13-14 ozs. My first 1/2A RC combat planes were BLACK WIDOW powered with 36"x 7" flat bottom wings and about 14 ozs RTF and the performance was nice. After a few repairs, etc., the weight would creep up, and then it was time to break out the .061s.

Thanks for the advice guys, I missed getting to the post office before they closed today so I don't have a weight on the plane yet. I installed the sure start engine and ran two tanks though it pretty rich for a little break-in and then tweaked it up to max output with a 6x4 nylon on it. I kind of tossed it up in the air a little and she seemed like she wanted to pull away. Nothing like it would hover, but I think it will have enough power to pull her around. The weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow, so if the wind is okay I'll go out and give it a toss at the field. I'll bring one of my TDs with a hayes mount with me and if the product engine won't keep her in the air I'm pretty sure the TD will. The only thing I'm not crazy about this engine is that while hand proping it, it wants to run backward most of the time! I installed the spring starter on it and that seems to solve the problem. If I can find a small high rpm electric DC motor, I think I'll try to make a starter and dump the spring as I'm sure it's slowing the rpms down with the added drag. I'll post tommorow and let you all know how she goes, Prop.

the bog standard trainer over here is the "banana" with a 39" wing and at about 22 oz. with standard radio gear it is very capable with a product engine+black widow cylinder running a MAS 6x3 and 10% nitro. very capable for a rud/ele plane and there is even a frequent combat event with something like twenty planes in the air at once...full contact encouraged

Prop,

That 6x4 is alittle big for this engine. USe a 6x3 at the most. Also if you do use an electric started make sure you put a thrust washer behind the prop driver. If not you will grind the prop driver into the front of the engine.

Later,
Tim

Hi Tim, The 6x4 is all I have, I busted the last 6x3 on my Whizard's maiden filght, hence my user name! I do have a 5x3 grey cox though. Do you think that would be better? I noticed that there is some play in the crank where a thrust washer would be needed. Thanks,Prop

The 6x4 is inviting an overheated engine, especially a new one. My product engines check in at 17000 with a 5x3 and 15% nitro. This works out to 45 mph and 1/2 pound of thrust.

Thanks Guys, I guess I'll go with the smaller 5x3 Cox. The wind wouldn't calm down on Sunday so I didn't even dare try to fly the contest plane! I thought about giving the Mark ll glider a spin, but better judgement prevailed and I flew a kite instead
