I have about finished a new LH RC and mounted a Cyclon .061 on it.
The plane is 9 ounces with a Hitec 555, two HS-55s, and a 50MaH battery.
The engine is turning an APC 4.2 X 4 34,800 with peaks at 35,000. 35,000 calculates to 139 MPH, disregarding airframe drag and prop efficiency.
So we are going to lose a few MPH there, but if the 4.2X4 unloads in the air, the engine is going to be turning a few more RPM too.
I'm fairly sure I can fly these things at, maybe, 90MPH. The other 30 or 40 MPH may be a bit problematic.
I best start with an APC 6 X 2.

LARRY, you know from your past experience above 100 mph that the faster you go, the quicker the elevator gets, so if you're in the inner hole at the servo arm, and about an inch up on the control horn, you should be just fine. The aileron travel is nice to set up with dual rates if you can, but I flew the MUSTANG with a $50 single rate radio with just low rate throws, like an 1/8" up and 1/8" down. I'll bet you're in for some exciting action!
BTW, if you still want a test pilot, I'll work for cheap

HAH! I'll pay the shipping to my house! (Beat that CP!)[sm=lol.gif]
That should be one seriously fast dude. Good luck with the maiden! Be sure to try a death dive to make sure the servos are in good condition.

Wicked! I share your concerns about speed... My Wal-mart wonder weighs in at 8oz full up & even with a poor running motor & a prop that is not optimized for the motor it screams across the sky. To HOT for my level of flying
Elevator...... Hmm... I touch it, and the plane goes vertical. The airplane loops on itself so tight that I can hardly follow what it is doing
Have fun

The first flight on my SIG Little Extra was exciting as I had forgotten to load any exponential. Every time I have tried to fly one of the wings without expo it has been a bout of gross over controlling.
I have this thing set up with -65 percent on both ailerons and elevator and a 50% rate on dual rates.
I suppose I could also put a Fora or Cyclon .050 on for the first flights ... or I could just send ole PIGG an airline ticket or ptulmer a gift!!
I need to buy one of those foam planes. Each time I have tried it has been the wrong season. I need to go to WalMart anyway and buy some dishwasher soap (their cheap stuff works better than any brand I have found) and I hope I can remember the plane. You can now buy fresh fruit anytime of year, but foam gliders are apparently seasonal.

Larry,
Hobby People carries these little gems if you cannot find them in/at Wal-Mart. They are sold under the name Flying Eagle. They are made by Comet Manufaturing
I throw the plane in the trash & just keep the wings.
If you find them at Wal-Mart they will be about $4.99

I'll need a place to stay, also LARRY[8D]. Have you tried those yellow lens sharpshooter glasses out? I did many years ago, and I liked them for AMA FAST. They make certain colors look vividly sharp. Your control program is what I like to go with, I just wish I was better at the "NO LOOK" dual rate switch fumbling. Was that a skill that the AIR FORCE had you guys work on?

I will look at some other local sites and then order, if necessary. Thank you for the link.

The Air Force did have student pilots work on something like finding the dual rate switch. The student had to pass a 'Blindfold Cockpit Check" before going solo.

I have "removed and replaced" the engine on the LiteHawk RC. All work was accomplished with independent labor under contract.
I removed the Cyclon .061 and mounted a Fora .050 and put a 6X2 prop on as well. The Fora with the 2 pitch should be good deal slower (50 MPH or so) than the VA with a 3 pitch is on my other LiteHawks (80 - 90 MPH).
That should make the trim flights more sedate. I have less trouble finding dual rate switches than I have finding the aileron or elevator trim. At 50 MPH , or so, the trim findin' and trim flight experience ought to be more enjoyable.

I got a couple of flights in with the Fora powered LiteHawk. The first was with the 6 X 2 prop. After that I switched to the Magic Black Prop (a Cox 5 X 3 Rubber Ducky cut to 4 X 3). It was pretty slow on the 2 pitch prop, but nice with the 3 pitch. With the Cyclon .061 and more pitch it will be a bullet. Keeping it aimed during a flight will probably leave little time for political discussion.
I had one trim issue that I think is related to the engine possibly not being properly square with the wing. Right after launch I was way out of elevator trim and it took lots of up trim to trim hands off. But when the engine quit (there is no throttle and, hopefully, every landing is dead stick) the plane pitched up a bit and it took a good deal of nose down in the glide.
I looked it over and it appears the engine is mounted pointed a couple of degrees down.
Since the plane is on the edge of tail heavy, I think I will build a shim out of 1/8" ply and sand an angle in it to get the engine set a zero offset.

LARRY, your approach to getting it dialed in worked pretty well. It will be interesting to see if you end up with a more forward CG liking for RC flying than for CL combat. Have you flown the .020 plane yet?

Flown the .020 ?
Well, sorta flew it. I still don't have the engine running well, but it was almost calm today and I gave it a try. The plane flies, but there was not enough power and it was right on the edge of a stall, except when it was stalled. I need to get with the engine program and get that figured out. However, the builders are all playing with their competition planes now and I will not be able to get any changes or more engines until the snow flies.

The streamer is a big help finding a plane in the tall grass too. Too bad about those .020s. I remember reading about how COX used some kind of air powered instrument to check the perfection of their liner bores with. Made me appreciate the fine line between go and no-go a little bit more. I don't see how such tiny engines like that can be mass produced and sold with out being test run.
