Default Cox cylinder finish?

Hey you Cox gurus. What does Cox do to get the cylinders to be black? Is is blueing? Can you use gun blue to fix some dings? I've got a few that have been scraped up by people using the Cox wrenches through the cylinder, etc. I wanted to chuck a few up in the lathe and clean them up.

Huh, how would you chuck these things up? Machine a blown head down to give you something to grip?

An old method of bluing is to boil the item in a 10 to 1 mix of water and phosphoric acid for an hour in an iron pot. No non ferrous metals to be present i.e. brass, copper etc. or the steel turns brown. The item to be blued must be squeaky clean and without fingerprints. Wether the item needs to be stripped of old bluing first I don't know. I would guess so.

I haven't done this myself but I intend to. I have some phos acid from years ago for pickling steel.

Luke.

Magic Marker works well. I'd try a fixture made from a worn out reedie crankcase and chuck it in a 4-jaw to dial it in.

Patrick,

I forgot to add that I have a cylinder that I have all the fins turned off of that I use to do just what you are thinking about. The old cylinders gets chucked up and the work piece screwed into it.

Tim

PT --

If you want a permanent finish, stop by your local gun shop or sporting goods store and pick up a bottle of cold blue or a gun blue touch up pen. The surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned before using. Cold blueing is quick and does not require the hot water bath used in the hot blueing process. Not good for large surface blueing, but cold blue should work well on the cylinders.
