Need help with foam
Hey guys.
I know a few of ya'lla re foam guru's and while this is not a 1/2a matter, no one in the other forums seems to want to respond.
A friend of mine who is gettign into the hobby was given a duraplane 40 trainer 3 years ago. He is just now getting around to building it. Sometime between then and now, the wing extensions have gotten lost. This is proving to be a slight problem because the wingloading on this plane is already a bit high for a trainer, but lacking this extra 10" of span will make this unflyable as a trainer.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to fashion replacements? Also, anything I should do to the wing to increase the strength of the wing without adding too much weight?

I had one of those "Drain-Pipes" with wings..... very "durable" I don't remember any extentions for the wings. I do remember using epoxy to glue the wing halves together... and wraping the jiont with plastic tape. I think there may have been a plastic "joiner", and using strapping tape from one side to the other.
I think I used a short carbon fire rod or arrow shaft to join the wing.
I actually used the drain pipe idea to make nacelles to mount the engines on a A-la Balsa US, 40 X 2 twin.

Maybe wrapping some coroplast around the end ofthe wing for extentions.... I'm thinking you want to get more span, right?
Anyhoo, you can fake it with Spad tech.... not like it could hurt a Duraplane by adding plastic

Do your friend a real favor and give him a decent trainer.
Those things gotta be tough cause they don't fly too good.

VIC, I dare ya to go to the SPAD forum and say that! That would be like standing up in a British pub, hoisting your glass and yelling," F*** THE QUEEN!"

CP, I bet back in the day, with the lights out, and a bag on my face...I would not be scared.[>:] She may have flown better than any spad [b]or[b] DP!
I feel pretty confident I could have broken ground anyway.[sm=48_48.gif]
FYI I have cut up many a cig sign and strapped an engine to it only to realize that I have a lot more fun cutting balsa and allowing an engine haul it around in the sky.[>:]

RE: Need help with foam
Thank for the input guys.
I wish i oculd buy him a decent trainer. He will probably start on my avistar for the first little bit until he gets comfortable.
I look at thier prices for the wing extensions, 4 bucks aint bad, but its 8 for shipping [&:][:@][:'(]
that, and I was considering getting two sets and putting two on each wing tip...
maybe i'll go by lowes or home depot and see what they have in stock..
that is unless one of you guys who has a foam cutter things they could cut me a set for less ??
Any thoughts on how I could strengthen the wing?

I like the idea of lengthening the wing. 30 minute epoxy will hold them on there quite well. I wouldn't worry about trying to strengthen the wing. It already has an aluminum spar running down the middle, and it's pretty robust. Remember a lot of high speed/ high stress wings (think of Q-500 pylon racers) use a foam wing without so much as a balsa spar. (Usually to their credit they are balsa sheeted)

RE: Need help with foam
You don't need that "Heavy-Stuff" use Blucore fan fold foam insulation at Lowes. You can scrap that heavy drain gutter and bild something kool, like a Top Dawg. wing panels are 18" long (minus the tips) and a tad over 9" chord..yet each one weighs in at 1.6-8 oz. Fuse with tailfeathers, wheels, etc is about 4.5oz. Add your .049 and radio gear, fuel tank & covering and you have about a 12 -13oz airplane with a 40" wing and 9" chord...Fly slow or fast,.. and bounce... Last photo should be My Roarin'20 wing on top of the Dop Dawg wing, done in Solite cream and Monokot metallic burgandy trim sheet... no one will know it's foam, unless you tell...shhhHHhhhhhh! Does that make me a "foam Guru"? uuuuuUUUUUuuuuummmmmmmmmm,..UuuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUUu uuuuuum,...uuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUuuum ummm..What was I sayin?[X(] oh yeah...
