I am in need of a kit for an .061 engine. I used this for 1/2a club combat, but this coming season we are switching back to SSC. I was thinking of this kit [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=000586846&I=LXM388&P=K[/link]. Any thoughts or input would be welcome.
I also have this question in the kit building forum.

You should try the Herr Pitts Special Kit .061-.074,30" http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXVK57&P=ML
I am currently working on one on the side as I build my trainer and it is a very fun build.

Rob, I think most guys that have built that one have ended up putting a .15 in it. At 22 to 28oz's it's a real heavy airplane for an .061 to pull around. I'd say that about the Pitts, too. Since we're passing out Tower links, take a look at this one. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXN773&P=ML
The specs are much better. Keep those in mind when looking for a good airplane for anything in the .049 to .061 range. Work really hard to keep it light. A nimh battery in the 300mah range will save a full oz over it's nicd brother. Little tricks like that pay off when it comes to launching and landing.

Sig does still make the wonder but it is far too much airplane for an .061. I am building one right now for a K&B .18. I have built the HOB Mustang. Great flying airplane and flies pretty well on a Norvel .061 but is no speed demon for sure. Just enough power to make the plane fun. For my money, with that engine, I don't think you could do any better than a Jr Falcon or Jr Skylark from Early RC Models. I have one of each and both will fly very well with the .061. My Jr Falcon has a Norvel AME .061 and it is surprisingly fast. They both build easily and are not a huge investment.

The answers you are getting are covering a broad range.
I really like the DARE shoestring kit for the 061. I think it would be quick but still nimble.
I own this kit, but have yet to build it.
An old ace pacer or GLH kit would also work well for the 061. The possibilities are endless.
and lastly, there are countless new eletric arfs that would convert nicely to an .061 from warbirrds to aerobatic.
please let us know what you choose.

For combat? Does Sig still make the Wonder?
A Herr Pitts would be far more work than I'd ever risk for any sort of combat.

Thanks for the feedback, I am leaning towards the Pitts right now.
Ptulmer,
I am planning on using micro servos and light battery pack. I have this from keeping the weight down on the 1/2a combat plane.
Dennis,
I am open to scratch building if you know of some plans and where I can get them. My "building" experience to date is several SPAD planes, Twist 40 ARF, Slow Poke Sport kit. I am currently putting together a DAGO Red 60 Arf and a Shrike 10 kit. I am an avid woodworker, so I am comfortable with my building skills. (It is my covering skills that need significant help)

RAGII,The RCM plans service has alot of so called 1/2A plans, but their selection could use some updating and weeding out. I think the best choice for a fast flyer is a GLH. The DNU by PTULMER is a great sporty flyer. If you want to go 3D, scratch build a HalfWit. Look in the RCU thread archives for it. Matchlessaero is the author.

Hey guys,
MY wife found this one and said I should get it. [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXM401&P=0[/link] She likes the looks of it. I know they say not to use a throttled engine for weight reasons, but I would be putting an .061 in it. What are your thoughts. (If she likes it that is one less hurdle to deal with)

I have a sig hummer I would sell you. They are pretty easy to adapt a throtte. The fuse sides are started, other than that it is unassembled. I can send you a picture if interested.

Rob, for some gawd-awful reason, they are specifying reedies. A Norvel .061 would do about twice as good! But (you knew there would be one) a friend built one and it wasn't a great flier. I didn't get close enough to determine the problem. That thing was so ugly it probably committed suicide! Other people have reported great success with it. I've seen a thread in the past where a guy taught himself to fly with one.

Rob,
I have a 1/2 A stealth w/ a Norvel .061 Big Mig RC. I got the plane in a trade or auction or some thing and it included a reed Cox .049. I flew it w/ that a couple of times, but the Norvel is far more fun. It flys great- very easy to control and I fly it like a crop duster - very close to the ground just over the top of the weeds at full throttle and w/ full confidence. It does loops and rolls, stall turns etc. Great fun and a can't lose plane.
If you use the Norvel tank mount it will fit right where the Cox w/ tank was mounted before- otherwise you will need to modify the engine mounting area to pull the Norvel forward for balance and the prop to clear the cheeks.
Go for it, Dale

The DNU kits can be found at www.selecthobbies.com along with many, many other nice 1/2a kits.
If Skaliwag is out, I can drop ship one. There's some in the pipeline.

270mah nicd
1oz tank
CA hinges
1/2a control horns (one for elevator)
1/2a aileron kit (or 4 2-56 rods to custom make a set)
3x - 2-56 clevis
2x - HS-55 equivalents (3 with throttle, 4 with rudder)
Engine and mount. Since Skaliwags out for a while, I can put together a custom kit for you. The only thing I don't have on hand is a mount and tank.

Errr... Covering? Eeeek! Wait a minute, I can toss in some doculam! You guys are on your own for the iron crosses. (Maltese crosses are different... I've got one of those on my arm) You guys are a rough crowd! The templates for the crosses are on the plans. Does that count?
The wing is the same as an Ace straight core, but cut down to a more appropriate span. Semi-symmetrical.

PT,
Do you have full size plans available? I went to your website and found where I could donload them, but I hate trying to glue pages together to get a full plan. I have access to a full size printer so printing is not an issue. Also, PM me what the cost is for a kit from you (wood pieces only).
Thanks,
Rob

Big Al, not too bad. I've got all that sitting around. Now we just need to settle on a price.
I think mnrc was yanking my chain because I made an assumption, but you guys are demanding!

Well, I made a full size pdf, added it to the zip file and tried to upload it. Somehow I managed to destroy the whole page... So, when it's back up, there will be an additional file in the zip for you guys with access to wide format printers.
