Yep, I agree with Rainedave. How do I know? Been there, done that!!! I sometime talk the guy at the paint store out of some of the quart or pint cans. If they do any mixing they always have new empty cans around. Ah... dope fumes!! Now what was I saying!!!

RE: hey, you dopeheads!
btw, I've got a BUNCH of mason jars. Any advice on how to use them effectively is welcome! Tim, I never figured you for a dopehead? I know you were into C/L for a while, is that where you picked up the habit? These other two don't surprise me, but you've always done monokote or spray paint. Unless that was colored dope you were spraying?

The dope fumes will dissolve the rubber seal and it will drop down into the dope.
HOW DO I KNOW THIS?
Find another lid that fits or try to scrape the seals out.

PT,
Oh yah...I've done dope before.........I try to lay down a coat of clear dope before I hit something with WB PolyU. I feel it help keep the water in the polyU from soaking into the wood so much.

Tim

rainedave, you can't imagine how many mason jars of pickles I have poured into a hole in the ground. Jams and jellys of every type. My mother and late grandmother would can everything they could and apparently they had the idea of using it to build a nuclear bunker. That way you could just starting eating from the walls and by the time you made it out, everything would be clear. Now, 'Stang and Al have the right idea. I've been going over the plans to build a nice still. Fuel for my model airplanes, of course.
I've stored acetone in old gatorade bottles before. And I mean pure acetone and for a long time!

Don't use anything for a seal that is affected by acetone
and you'll be fine. Metal, glass. and uhh metal and glass.

I too have learned this the hard way, but until that point they sure looked like the bee's knees. I imagined a shelf full of mason jars, with solvents, thinned Balsarite, indoor cement, etc., all there at my fingertips when I need 'em.
If you can get a good deal on an assortment of Nalgene bottles from a plastic container company or whatever, those rock for solvents, paints, etc. in the workshop. For small amounts, try film cans.. they are HDPE = High Density PolyEthylene. Pretty inert to typical solvents.

pt:
You know what I think? Use the mason jars. Use aluminum foil across the tops before sealing - not plastic wrap. By the time the seals fail (if they ever do) the dope should already have been used, or turned to gunk, or I will be in the ground and won't have to hear from you.
Whatever you do, do not put pickles in the jars since they will not sell at Perry unless you put a props on them! Besides, it is very confusing when pickles are floating in clear dope.[X(]
btw, sign me up for a jar.

Hmmm.... foil on the lid seems like an easy enough solution and I wouldn't have to take the seran wrap downstairs and get in trouble with wifey.

I actually ordered a dozen coated paint cans, pint sized, because dope fumes dissolved the seals on everything else I tried.
And you know what I discovered? Paint cans work really well for paint!

RE: hey, you dopeheads!
Also, a coat of Nitrate dope before glassing with lightweight glass and epoxy helps keep the epoxy from soaking in too much.
cheers, Graham in Embrun near Ottawa Canada.

RE: hey, you dopeheads!
Hi All,
Excuse me if I 'Bogart' this thread a bit...
I ran out of Sig thinner. LHS wants an arm and a leg for a quart.
I use acetone to clean my brushes, but it does not thin out the nitrate or buterate for brushing very well.
Anyone know of a cheaper thinner substitute for the Sig dope thinner?
I use dope to seal sheet tail surfaces/ails etc. before painting with latex/acrylic/WPU mixes.
Take care,
Have fun,

I've used lacquer thinner from Lowes to clean and thin with. I had some older colored dope that seemed to separate out the pigment when thinned, but I don't know if it were the thinner or just the dope being so old. Lacquer thinner worked fine with clear dope.
13.50 a gallon.

Dave, I use lacquer thinner for cleanup since it's less expensive. But recently I've only been using Brodak dope products. They are mixed for him by Randolph and in my opinion are much better than Sig's. As with most finishing products, the more you buy the cheaper it is.
The 32oz is $7.40:

I've been meaning to experiment in this direction. A big part of the problem if you are using colored dope is finding a solvent that doesn't dissipate too quickly. Toluene is readily available, usually right next to the laquer thinner and is a major component in dope. Just a thought!

Being a cheapskate myself I have used Klean - Strip lacquer thinner. Beware, it appears to have a lot of water in it which beads up on the surface (or in the dope) and leave holes. I have been told by fellow chearskates that some of the DuPont automotive thinners work fine.
