ORIGINAL: KidEpoxy Wow, I see what you mean about that cat. It completely vaporized the Fin & Rudder off thet plane! |
RE: new model started
When I grow up I wanna build like you:D

RE: new model started
I like your plan. But I'd also like to try a couple of things with it. Is it a CAD drawing by any chance? If so could you email it to me?
I'm thinking that I'd like to flatten the lower line of the nose and tail to lower the thrust line closer to the wing and move the tail down closer to the thrustline as well. With that done I think you could get away with a perfectly flat one piece wing to make it easier to build. To get away from the usual adverse yaw or the model's desire to tighten the bank in a turn I'll introduce beveled tips that both add shape to the tip and act as small tip dihedral panels. |
RE: new model started
Thanks, Bruce! I already glued in dihedral in my wing, but your changes could allow some one else to make a flat one. I like the idea of outward-angled tip ribs (plates, whatever).
I drew it in Deltacad (.dc extension). It exports to .dxf ok except line weights don't get preserved very well. Splines, text and circles seem to export fine, though. I'll PM you for your email address and send you both versions. |

Great job!
I can't wait for her maiden. Cheers, Alex |

Thanks, Alex! Me either.
Well, it definitely looks different than the cad drawing.[X(] I wasn't really aiming for the Mako Shark look, but, hey, why not? |
RE: new model started
Dave,
Looks great! Can't wait to see it finished. LAter, Tim |
RE: new model started
Looks great, RD! Funny how the 3D model looks different from the side view drawing.

Thanks Tim and cp!
Yes, I definitely think it's time I started trying to teach myself to use 3D software. It's dangerous what a little amonia (Windex) can lead to. I dampened the sides with amonia so they would bend and ended up with something that looks like a fish. Maybe I should glue a dorsal fin on it! Actually, I like the profile a lot. Maybe I should add some biomorphic tips to the wings. |
RE: new model started
Toss on some ornamental Pect Fin cannards;)
With the ammonia trick, do you lash it down to take shape & let it dry... or can you glue it "wet"? Going to need to do some compound curving on my b24 Nacelles, and was planning on trying the windex to do it rather than planking it. |

ke, you can do it either way. One issue with glueing while it's wet is that the amonia kicks CA and turns it white. I think the ideal method is to wet it, use carpenter's glue and wrap it with tape until dry (like you were making laminations). If you have one of those little X-acto table saws you can rip a bunch of strips with beveled edges and plank. Otherwise, the Windex method is faster.
Here's a masking tape mock-up. Weighs 4ozs in the photo. I think I'll get in under 10ozs auw. |
RE: new model started
Have you thought about a paint scheme yet? It's getting close to Halloween so:
I'd paint big googly eyes on the "dorsal fin" and shark's teeth on the underside of engine bay. Either that or go with an "grey alien" scheme. [X(] EG |
RE: new model started
Darn Dave, she's lookin' good - slippery I'd call it!

:DDave,I truely admire your building skills.I wish I had some of them!;)

Thanks guys. Since this is an experimental design - I don't even know how it will fly - I didn't want to waste any of my precious Esaki tissue on it. I had some Worldtex left over from another plane and used that. I think I'll spray the fuse with white dope. That will contrast nicely with the blue. Maybe orange and blue stripes down the sides.

RE: new model started
Looks good, should be a sweet little bird.

RE: new model started
Bottom of the wing blue too?The orange on the control surfaces would show up good on the bottom.SWEET!

A few more pics. The servos are installed, the surfaces hinged, I just need to spray some white dope on the fuselage and install a tank. With the Surestart and a 370mah nimh up front it balances right on the second spar. I added a skid/subfin and a dorsal extension to the front of the fin. It's going to end up weighing 11ozs or maybe a little less. That heavier than my target weight, but still not too heavy.
I can't wait to fly it and see how it handles. |

I sprayed the white dope over the weekend. I still need to clearcoat/fuelproof it. Then, I'll let it cure for awhile and it will be ready to fly. I still don't have a name for it.

RE: new model started
Name, you said name? Hows 'bout Blue Bayou (as in Blew By You) or Blue-Blur (is that aliteration? I forget). Or should the name not be influenced by color as in Swifty, Come Hither, El Performo, or - Crew-Sir. If all else fails there is always, Nice Plane, My Pretty, or -My Precious (from the Lord of the Rings cute but dangerous character). I didn't get a nap today.

RE: new model started
You just may have to start a name that plane thread.
Still can't wait for the flight report. Great work BTW. |
RE: new model started
version 2 really could use some wing sweep, pointed tips, Dorsal fin & PecFin Cannards, and shark face.
would funtional canard Vtail mix work for the pectoral fins? Eliminate the Hstab and sharktail it? |

RE: new model started
Thanks, KE. V.2 may have to wait until this one at least flies. The original idea was to have something with basic geometry and simple construction. I wanted to try and retain a long tail moment and that required extending the nose out for balance. I think that's why a few people have envisioned canard winglets up front. Two things I might try later are building a tapered wing or one with a P-51 type LE that meets the fuselage further forward, or both. The main thing for now is to get it finished and find out how it flies.
