Ahem .. for BIG stuff
This poll does not really show the true spectrum of propellers, since it does not list Menz, AM, Mejzlik, Biela, 3W, MSC, Engle, BME, Bambula, or other props associated with giant scale engines.
I use APC's exclusively on my small glo stuff. . but for the larger gassers you have to be able to "prop" the plane for the environment and flying style you are doing. For 3D a Menz is pretty darned hard to beat, though the CF "3D prop" from 3W is better at some maneuvers and is also a great all around prop. . .the Menz spools VERY quickly. . about 50-% faster than any CF prop out there, and pulls like a tractor. . has GREAT downline braking as well and is smooth and very stable on approaches and landings. . like having a parachute in front of the plane when you kill the throttle but jsut putt putts along at 2 clicks off idle.
For all-around flying a prop that covers the entire spectrum well is the Mejzlik 2-blade. . its decently quiet unless you really try to rip it, accelerates very well for 3D flying, and is very smooth and predictable in sequence flying. About the best all-around prop out there.
The Biela, IMHO, is THE prop for Sequences. . it is a lot like a Menz, but ismade out of CF, so its heavier and spools slower. It also pulls like a tractor (like a menz) does not unload because the blade is stiffer (so it is very quiet) and it's constant speed in the air is VERY good for Sequence style flying. . I prefer it over any other prop in that environment.
The AM is very narrow, as is the Engle. I've never used an Engle, but the AM gets the rpm UP and keeps it there. . one of the easiest props to rip, and it does not pull as well as a Mejzlik. . downline braking really suffers with this prop. If you WANT to make noise. . this is the one to buy.
3-blades are a totaly different animal. . . . . .mejzlik and AM make the best out ther IMHO. . with the mejzlik poulling harder (by just a little bit) and the AM letting the engine rev more freely due tot he thinner blades. both pull very well (for a 3-blade) but lose about 20% performance over a 2-blade. Extremely quiet, though. . . .which is very necessary these days.
