This engine is a vertical shaft push lawn mower-type.
I sure would like to know what modifications were made to the sump, although it comes to mind placing a slinger on the conrod, like horizontal shaft engines have and verticals don't. But then again, that may not be necessary as the sump is very small on vertical shaft engines - I've been considerig this same conversion - vertical to horizontal - some time ago, and even bought a cheap lawnmower for that purpose.

I have to agree with soarrich, that engine sure would be great on a scale plane from the first decades of flight due to its slow running characteristics.
