But if you simply pull it from one corner it peals off.

OH Yea!!! It just comes off in little bitty strips.
For you, it came off in little bitty strips. For me, it comes off in decently large areas. What doesn't come off with the first area gets a corner picked up and controlled pulling gets some more.

It'll all be off in less time than it would take to setup the grinder, get out the pruning shears, go get the shovel, find the machete, prepare the demolition charges, put fresh 80grit in the sanding block, or open the can of hydrochloric acid.
