Can't understand why they did'nt just clear the area and pull the canopy jettison handle, unless the rocket motors are not man enough for it to clear the rest of the jet. Could have been an easier and quicker way of extraction.

That would just burn the heck out of the cockpit's avionics and interior... $182,000 in canopy costs plus avionics/ seat replacement would be a couple dollars more in damage.
.... As a taxpayer, I say go with the chainsaw method. [8D]
