Can't understand why they did'nt just clear the area and pull the canopy jettison handle, unless the rocket motors are not man enough for it to clear the rest of the jet. Could have been an easier and quicker way of extraction.

Fair enough, though on such an expensive asset I would expect the blast to be directed outside the cockpit so as not to damage the occupant
I wonder what failed on the manual release mechanism despite all those tax dollars

my guess is so if the seat decided to part ways with the jet, it wouldn't splatter the pilot on the ceiling. Which would also explain why the fire-fighters have their heat/flame suits on, so as not to get burnt by the extraction rockets.

. You've won the cash prize of $250,000.00 located here in Nigeria.
Just send me $3,000.00 so I can get the total winnings released to you.
Sorry Tom, I had to spice it up a bit w/ some BS.

BTW, how's the TomCat doing so far??

That would just burn the heck out of the cockpit's avionics and interior... $182,000 in canopy costs plus avionics/ seat replacement would be a couple dollars more in damage.

All military jets can have the canopy manually jettisoned for quick pilot egress.

In this pic, the ejection was done on purpose for a film, the flying pilot stayed with the Mig to landing. Caution HOT SURFACES.
... Note how the ejecting pax seems to have a considerable case of spine compression during the launch [X(]

There is normally a second completely manual method of removing canopies without the use of pyros, involving unlocking and disconnection of the raise/lower mechanism, followed by manual lifting to allow for extraction.
Mig pic is amazing, that would have cost a few $$$'
