That would just burn the heck out of the cockpit's avionics and interior... $182,000 in canopy costs plus avionics/ seat replacement would be a couple dollars more in damage.
He meant blow the canopy - not the seat. All military jets can have the canopy manually jettisoned for quick pilot egress. In these cases the seat does not fire, so the avionics and the seat would not need replacing.
