They will do it, but it's harder on the ignitions.
Too narrow of a plug gap subjects the plug to carbon ball and whisker fouling. Also makes for a colder running plug since the energy the plug was intended to deliver isn't quite there.
The right ignitions can deliver a spark with a 1/2" plug gap but we certainly don't use them. Everything you alter between the ignition and the plug has an impact on something.
