The "cannister" on the headlight guard, is for the plug to cover the base of the headlight mount. The light assemblies could be removed. that cap with the chain, would be put over the exposed section where the headlight was. To protect it from debris. ALL shermans, and later tanks had them, possibly up to the M-47.
