You double nut the shaft...get another 1/4 x 28 nut, and put the 2 together...tighten them (jam nut style ) into each other.
Then use a small wrench on the flats of the end of the crank to keep it from rotating as you put a prop wrench or socket on the double nuts to unscrew the stud.
