The piston and sleeves will interchange between side and rear exhaust as long as both engines are short stroke or long stroke.

You can not rotate the same sleeve both side and rear due the sleeve is worned to a perfect fit togheter piston after running-in and can not rotate again to other side either it is a rear- or side exhaustported engine.
