The OP is in the Detroit area their is lots of clubs down there. I recommend contacting a LHS and get some local club info. or go to the AMA website. Someone would be more than happy to help him. There is many good people down there. I bet he could even get flight training.
Yes of course and this is exactly the direction I was trying to get his buddy to push him towards obviously.
Now as far as his buddy using a seventeen pound sport plane with a large gas engine That is potentially up to thirty years old or so and could indeed be covered with a wide variety of covering including paper products such as silkspan which indeed does rot as well as silk. The intent here was this kids first airplane and it even became evident he may attempt it with no help other than the sim.
So while this airplane may indeed be a good buy for you or me (I am working on the restoration of an eighty inch Fokker Tri motor with three half A engines and full house external scale flight controls as we speak) But it is an inappropriate airplane for someones first trainer especially when he may be going it alone.
