The OP is in the Detroit area their is lots of clubs down there. I recommend contacting a LHS and get some local club info. or go to the AMA website. Someone would be more than happy to help him. There is many good people down there. I bet he could even get flight training.

Yes of course and this is exactly the direction I was trying to get his buddy to push him towards obviously.
Now as far as his buddy using a seventeen pound sport plane with a large gas engine That is potentially up to thirty years old or so and could indeed be covered with a wide variety of covering including paper products such as silkspan which indeed does rot as well as silk. The intent here was this kids first airplane and it even became evident he may attempt it with no help other than the sim.
So while this airplane may indeed be a good buy for you or me (I am working on the restoration of an eighty inch Fokker Tri motor with three half A engines and full house external scale flight controls as we speak) But it is an inappropriate airplane for someones first trainer especially when he may be going it alone.

i have a flight sim im going to let him practice on, as for covering it feels more like nylon now. is it suppose to be like that or is it suppose to be a plastic feel? i know fresh monokote is a lot more shiny and plastic feeling, but after age does it dull out and turn more nylon fabric feeling?

Good luck. I also think it is a Midwest kit. It will fly great with a G-38.

I bet the covering is solartex:-) NOT Monocote. You can tell because it has a ''fabric feel''. When the plane was new, we used standard servos. I would sugget more powerful servos on the elevator and rudder (at least). Use regular servos in the rest, but use a 5 cell battery on the receiver. This will move the servos faster, and they will have more power.
Good luck. I also think it is a Midwest kit. It will fly great with a G-38.

When someone asks what's a rudder and elevator then says he will help set up a plane to make sure it is correct would be the first clue that trouble will rear it's ugly head. A club or hobby shop would be the first stop to look for help. The net is a good place for advise but really can't help in detail. I see this plane as being a money pit then a hole in the ground unless there is a lot of hands on help and training. It would be a fun plane for me to set up and fly but I wouldn't turn one of my students loose with it as it sits.
Listen to John and get a lot of help.

It is a bit extreme for a first plane. No argument there. With proper help he would have an excellent chance to succeed. Alone he does not stand a chance with that plane. He will hurt himself or others. A simulator does not teach the most important thing. FIELD SAFETY!

Thanks I know what a rudder ailerons and elevators are. Sorry that I'm not up to par with the slang names of those parts. I have flown before and know what I am doing. My main purpose of this post was to find information on this plane. Flying planes is not my number one hobby. Buy I will not let a friend go out and try to fly that monster without knowing what he is doing.
