Model Tech Excite 90
I have a unique situation in that I work weekends at a hobby shop and the owner is in the middle of an evaluation of this model for the store.
I was able to see the problems that the expert builder (not me) had and as he is a very particular builder he was put out a lot by the lack of quality in the fit of the parts, and at the same time another modeler at my field was assembling one as well:
Yes the belly pan does not fit right on both.
The tank position is way to high and will siphon because of it, as well as make the tuning of the needle next to impossible for a newer motor (new Magnum 91XLS and used Supertiger 90)
The firewall has no right thrust, but the cowl does have right thrust.
When the wing was originally bolted to the fuse and the normal checkpoints were used on the wingtips it showed that the wing was not correctly mounted. The builder removed the blind nuts and reset the wing to find out that the ailerons were badly offset compared to the fuse and that at prescribed deflection one of the ailerons was jammed against the fuse and had not achieved the proper movement.
Now all this being said I will say that the plane is a joy to fly (wing placed in the original position even tough it is a little out of align).
Both planes had to go through a lot of extra work to get things to work right for the engine:
The tank being so high in the fuse is a big problem in that the motor has to be set with the needle so closed that it will get too lean in hover and we actually had the insulator on a glow plug melt out from hover and inverted running. The Magnum was not damaged even though by all rights it should have been and yes I like the Magnums very well.
The Supertiger plane first had a Cline regulator (to eliminate the siphon) installed and it worked great with the cowl off, but there was not enough room under the cowl to allow the Cline to work correctly, so a Perry pump was installed (hangs below the cowl) and it works fine. I will say that this pilot also tried angling the motor a different way and had to end up getting another motor mount after all was said and done.
The Magnum plane was revamped by lowering the tank position and beefing up the nose a little to compensate for the wood cut out to allow the tank to come down to be inline with the motor carb.
Both planes have almost all of the bottom of the cowl removed to allow the motor try to cool. 100degree days have not helped here in S. Texas but that to will pass.
We are now working on the mixes to help with the roll couple and things like that, while smiling all the while as the plane is just so much fun to fly, even with all the problems above.
