Lablover,
I will agree that electric is different. As someone who was a DIE HARD glow fan for many years, I was just as skeptical as you. I had a lot of similar thoughts, however, after flying them, I have learned that it is different in a good way. I flew a YS powered plane 2 weeks ago and could NOT believe the different. The electrics instantaneous response is amazing, as well as the torque. Both of which were things I thought the YS had until I flew electric. I was forturnate enough to copy a known electric setup from Dave Lockhart and he told me to go fly and it wont take long to see the advantage. He was right. Once I got the throttle curve the way I wanted, I absolutely love it.
Anyway, you do NOT need a backup to fly pattern. It is a nice luxury and I will never go to the NATS again without one, but I flew many years with only 1 plane. Many people who have backups, don't even take them to local contests. Having an OS 1.40, I doubt you will have any issues.
If you are looking at backups, I would be looking at things you want to keep for a while. If you think you are interested in jumping to electric wait about a month until the new Vanquish 2m comes out. It is on the boat and will be here by mid to late April. I have one coming, just to play with it, and I plan to do a full build thread on it and flight review, comparing it against my Wind S Pros. They will be offering a motor with it, and you can pick up an ESC and such from F3A Unlimited and you are ready to go. I am building mine with good, but not great servos to show that you can fly pattern without a $4000 plane. All up, I plan to have it ready to fly for a cost of less than 1500, including packs.
If a good deal comes up, I would look at it, but I wouldn't rush out to buy a backup just to buy one.
