Default I need a backup

This will be my first year in Pattern. I bought a Temptation form a local club member with a os 140 pipe etc. I was advised to get a backup plane. I see where that can make sense if I travel to a contest and my plane poops out etc.

Any suggestions? I plan on going Electric eventually...( I THINK) so I may have to factor that in. Again, my first year so not sure what my fav will be

Looking for some advice.

Also signed up for the NSRCA. not sure what else is required. I belong to RCCD and have my AMA

Can't wait

Joe

Sportsman can be flown with just about anything from an ugly stik (although not pretty) on up. What class are you flying?

Sportsman class.

That's what the newbies fly for the first year right?

there is a Focus 1 for sale rtf for $500 in the classifieds. That would be a great back up. It even uses the exact same engine your primary does. For sportsman you cant go wrong with that.

That would be the class unless you were coming into pattern from a lay off or IMAC usually..... If you want a secondary 2M plane a used Focus would be easy enough to find I think.

edit - I see Chris already found a Focus for you.....

And even i have a NIB Focus II ARC Sitting in my basement. Can't really see you having any problems with a OS140 powered plane though.

Hey I hear you are going Elec this year? I gotta say, for some reason there is something about electric that does not tickle my fancy. I have no clue why either. I told someone the plane feels different and they laughed at me his will be the start of my second year in RC period so maybe I'm nuts. I do like the idea of not tuning an engine however

I'll be going to Toledo Friday, maybe I can find something there. If not, then some of these Focus may be tempting.

Lablover,

I will agree that electric is different. As someone who was a DIE HARD glow fan for many years, I was just as skeptical as you. I had a lot of similar thoughts, however, after flying them, I have learned that it is different in a good way. I flew a YS powered plane 2 weeks ago and could NOT believe the different. The electrics instantaneous response is amazing, as well as the torque. Both of which were things I thought the YS had until I flew electric. I was forturnate enough to copy a known electric setup from Dave Lockhart and he told me to go fly and it wont take long to see the advantage. He was right. Once I got the throttle curve the way I wanted, I absolutely love it.

Anyway, you do NOT need a backup to fly pattern. It is a nice luxury and I will never go to the NATS again without one, but I flew many years with only 1 plane. Many people who have backups, don't even take them to local contests. Having an OS 1.40, I doubt you will have any issues.

If you are looking at backups, I would be looking at things you want to keep for a while. If you think you are interested in jumping to electric wait about a month until the new Vanquish 2m comes out. It is on the boat and will be here by mid to late April. I have one coming, just to play with it, and I plan to do a full build thread on it and flight review, comparing it against my Wind S Pros. They will be offering a motor with it, and you can pick up an ESC and such from F3A Unlimited and you are ready to go. I am building mine with good, but not great servos to show that you can fly pattern without a $4000 plane. All up, I plan to have it ready to fly for a cost of less than 1500, including packs.

If a good deal comes up, I would look at it, but I wouldn't rush out to buy a backup just to buy one.

That's an excellent suggestion from Arch. Wait for the Vanquish.

Having recently made my first foray into 2-meter electrics, I can say without hesitation you will not regret it. And I will predict right now that the electric ship will quickly become your primary and the other glow bird will become your back-up.

Yes, electric is different, but it has quite a few advantages as Arch has noted, and also it is a LOT easier on your airframe and your electronics. While an aileron servo might last a season or 2 on a gas or glow model, there is no reason it would not last several seasons on an e-bird, so much less is the vibration. Using a well-balanced and lightweight carbon fiber prop, it is simply amazing how low the vibration levels are, even at full throttle. And linear throttle response throughout the flight envelope is so much easier to set up on the Tx and to execute while flying.

Also there's the noise consideration and the clean up aspect for glow and gas. Practically non-existent with electric.

The big downside for me with electrics is the field charging of batteries. However, I bit the bullet and made a nice modular charging station with 2 Cellpro 10S's, 2 power supplies and a Honda 1000-watt generator, which is a common set-up in e-pattern. Battery prices are coming down, and it is possible to get a PAIR of 5000mAh LiPo's (connected in series for one flight pack) for about $80 (!) from the Hong Kong and Singapore suppliers. F3A Unlimited also has some very high quality primo packs (low internal resistance) at very good prices.

Joe,

I took a look at your profile and noticed that you live in Sterling Heights. I live in the Rochester area. Out of curiosity, do you belong to one of the local clubs? I belong to the Skymasters club. I just got started flying pattern last year so I am pretty much a newbie as well.

Where does one shop for this Vanquish...Or go to look at or order it?

More on the Vanquish in [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10398247/anchors_10427359/mpage_3/key_/anchor/tm.htm#10427359]this thread[/link].

Just checked and it's not on the Extreme Flight website yet. Maybe shoot 'em an e-mail and put down a deposit?? Don't know if this will expedite anything, though.

But I'm liking the Sickle so much that I might just get another so I'll have the same plane for primary and backup. Only 13 flights and already I'm hooked. Would've had a bunch more flights on it by now but for the howling winds of the last couple of weeks.

I would second Arch on the need of a back up plane. Don't do it, fly the hell out of the one you have now. Save that money for now and then spend the accumulated money on a real nice plane + motor combo (glow or electric).

It does make sense you ensure your plane is in tip-top shape all the time. Usually problems don't come as a surprise if you had paid attention.

Joe,

Thanks for the update. I was at the RCCD contest last September. I suspect you bought one of Peter's temptations. Nice planes. I am also thinking about the 2M Vanquish since I fly electric only. Should be a great plane for the price. Knock on wood, but as newbie I have not had a need for a backup. I keep thinking that given how quickly things seem to evolve in pattern I might be better off just buying a new plane the day after losing the current one. I am currently flying a .50 sized Angel so if anything happened I would be in the market for a Wind 110 or the Vanquish if it is available. Obviously, if I have an issue at a contest I would be out, but so far it has not been a problem.

I Did buy one of his Temptations. I love the plane!!! I regret not starting the Pattern thing sooner. LOL..Heck, I just started RC April last year Do you plan to travel to any contests this year? I got the OK to buy myself a nice trailer for my planes/gear etc. So, I will have plenty of space.

Joe,

Lucky you. The Temptations are nice and they have served Peter well. I have been flying for a long time, but just recently got interested in pattern last year. So far I have attended three contests including the one at RCCD. It has been fun. I flew Sportsman and this year I am thinking about moving to Intermediate. Started flying the sequence last fall and in the simulator from time to time during the winter, but it definitely needs more practice.

I will be attending a couple of contests this year, but I have not decided which. I would like to make it to Muncie for the Judging seminar/contest in May. After that, I might make it to the Ohio Classic, Heart of Ohio and RCCD contests. Have not decided yet. I will probably be flying the Angel this season once again.

Maybe when the weather gets a little nice we should get together for a practice session or two. So far, I am the only active pattern flyer at Skymasters so it would be nice to have some company. Maybe we could even rope Peter into one of the sessions as well.

Teo, you'll find that your enjoyment of pattern wil increase hugely if you can link up with a practice buddy or two...or three or four. Rick, Dave, Bill and I fly together often and it has helped all of us a lot.

You're welcome to come to St Clairsville to fly with us as many afternoons as you like; it's only, what, a six hour drive for you?

Hi Scott,

I agree with you. We have one serious IMAC pilot in my club and he has been helping me out by judging my manuevers or calling out rudder corrections when needed. He has been extremely helpful, but it would be nice to hang out with a few pattern guys as well. If I can I would love to come St. Clairsville again. It was a longish drive (6+ hours) but well worth it.

Nice!! I have 3 dogs (Choc Lab, Basset hound and a mixed breed) and 4 cats. I finally have a workshop that I can close off from the animals and I still get pet hairs under my monokote [:@] . Good luck with your pattern experience. Pattern fliers are the best pilots and always very helpful. I know I got lots of help when I first started competing (38 years ago) and it was really appreciated!
