Did he clean out the ring groove using the old ring before installing the new ring? Then like Super08 stated check the ring gap too.
If the ring seems more thick, measure the old ring and the new ring. If the old ring is thinner, let Frank Bowman know. its possible they (the engine company) changed something along the way.
