Personally.
I use 2x2's for the corners and horizontal/vertical stiffners. Then 1/4'' luan ply for the sides. I also place two o three horizontal facing 2x2's across the width of the crate on the bottom of it, to elevate it off the ground so forklifts can get under it w/o busting the crate. And for putting it all together, drywall screws
Exactly how I do it for the most part, with an occasional 2x4 thrown in somewhere.
