Appreciate if someone could outline the basics of crate building, maybe a layout, materials needed and tips and tricks for someone with total woodwork deficit syndrome.

Personally.
I use 2x2's for the corners and horizontal/vertical stiffners. Then 1/4" luan ply for the sides. I also place two o three horizontal facing 2x2's across the width of the crate on the bottom of it, to elevate it off the ground so forklifts can get under it w/o busting the crate. And for putting it all together, drywall screws

Da Rook, I just finished a crate to ship a Ultra Flash to a customer of mine.
I always take photos of my planes in the crate so I have a record of how they left here.
I use 2x3 lumber in the corners. I find it to be much straighter than 2x2 and only a few cents more money. I use the 1/4 inch luan on the sides.
