The needles don't have anything to do with starting. Don't do anything to them until you have it running. Hand starting is a set of skills in and of itself, which is why the vast majority of us have invested in electric starters. You might consider one yourself. It's worth the cost in time and frustration saved, not to mention damaged props caused by you getting frustrated as you flip away!
